In the 1940's short ties were in fashion because men wore their trousers higher and waistcoats which covered a longer tie.

Why where them long? You know it's just a piece of clothing to keep your collar closed in the cool rainy environment of northern Europe, right? There is no reason for them to be long, or to where them anywhere besides the north of Europe. Certainly they're unneeded in warm climates.
