Just because you don't believe in something doesn't mean you can't be effected by it. If someone doesn't believe in gravity, does that mean they can jump off a building and not end up falling to their deaths just because they don't believe in it? If you don't believe in prison does that mean you won't end up there if you break laws (which you also don't believe in)?

That being said, hell is full of atheists who didn't believe in it, but nonetheless they're there.
