Buddy of mine in back highschool (our equivalent at least), went hard on first alcohol, then alcohol and drugs, the harder stuff, cocaine and acid and such, at least that's what he had told us. He was depressed too, in hindsight.
One day he went to the family living room while nobody was there, slit his wrists and started bleeding out. His parents came home very shortly after, found the bleeding son still alive, tried to help, but he fought them, screamed at them and then used the knife he used on his wrists earlier to slit his throat.

We kinda know about that because another buddy was living in the same apartment house just next door, heard all the screaming, ran over to help/see what's going on. The apartment door was open, so he and some neighbors actually went inside, seeing him rapidly bleed out from the throat wound. He was dead before the EMTs even showed up.
He was like 18 at the time.

Back when I was in the Navy my buddy and I used to make suicidal jokes all the time. Literally any time something went wrong or we were mildly inconvenienced we'd crack a joke about jumping off the ship or throwing ourselves down a ladderwell head first.

Then one day the guy actually did it. He fucking killed himself right before we went back out to sea and the only thing I could think of was "Jesus Christ man, I was only kidding around."

I stopped making suicide jokes after that.
