Why are people on the internet like this? They're fucking EVERYWHERE. I can not stand captions. I don't need words, I have EARS--you know, the thing that people LISTEN with. Why do you need words on your screen? You're not deaf, are you? You have functioning ears, right? You have to be the most retarded creature on earth to require captions while watching television or videos.

Captions ruin the whole show/movie/video. It's just a big black box that takes up the bottom part of the screen. It's distracting from the actual thing I'm trying to watch. I'll instinctively look at it and read ahead of the dialogue. It ruins the whole thing and detracts from the intended experience.

The reason I'm complaining is because I went to an event for my University where we all watched a movie. One fucking non-deaf RETARD with perfectly functioning ears asked "hey can you turn on captions?" Why are people like this? One person requests something to improve their experience and it ruins it for me and many others.

Fuck. Captions.

Tell me what written grammatical unit is above the letter and below the sentence.

Word..

I'm talking about having words on the screen. I don't need the words to be written down, they are already spoken.

I see some value in them. There were times when I had no idea what people in movies, videos, podcasts, or songs were saying, both in English and my native language. For example some scenes in the English dub of Hellsing Ultimate.
Also, some like Primitive Technology on Youtube says noting and explains only via the captions.
But that only counts for manual captions. Youtube auto captions can go hang. I've found a Japanese music video where Youtube translated the official English translation of the lyrics back into Japanese. Not showing anything would have been better than that.

I have legitimately never needed to go back and hear what someone said in a movie/tv show/video. I don't understand how this is a problem for people at all.

The only use for them would be maybe learning other languages or watching foreign stuff. I don't do that, but those aren't the cases I'm talking about anyway.

It's for the deaf. It only sucks if you're watching a movie with foreign languages in it but only the english has subs. If there's no subs for the other languages then yeah it ruins the movie.

as someone with perfectly fine ears:
sometimes a word im unfamiliar with is used, especially when watching something fantasy based like LOTR or star wars with a bunch of made up words for the worldbuilding
or a name is said and it helps to know how to spell it
also i watch a lot of really old crusty shit like from the 30s with those accents and audio quality it can be nice to read what im hearing

to be fair yeah that one guy sounds like a faggot. i prefer captions but i wouldnt impose that on everyone else as i know most probably dont care for them. that's what youre upset about, not captions as a whole. just some faggot. misdirection

I never saw that movie but actors mumble like niggers now and the recording is fucked up too.

It's kind of both. I'm upset that his suggestion forced captions on everyone, and ruined the experience for me. Society prioritizes those who "need" rather than those who are affected. He claimed he "needed" the captions, but the captions themselves negatively affected me and my viewing experience.

those are forced subs
but also it can be part of the director's vision that the average joe isnt supposed to know what's being said. i mean dont get me wrong i agree completely, even if its the director's vision fuck that shit

but also not for the deaf, maybe you have to watch shit on TV at 2 am at 5% volume without headphones. there are other reasons its useful

I can't stand it when native English speakers make movies / tv shows almost entirely in a foreign language. Like I just want to watch it, I don't want to read. Same reason why I wont watch any anime until there is a dub. I just dislike reading captions, it ruins the experience.

yeah i cant agree with the last part. if its in a foreign language then you gotta keep that part of the director's vision intact
not to mention a lot of dialogue will be mis-translated, ad-libbed, or straight up replaced to "match the lip movements" kind of shit or the pacing. completely changing what was said.
not to mention to accommodate english speaking foreigners, sometimes entire plotpoints are changed, creating a completely new storyline because the original that may seem alien to english foreigners
i.e. the onigiri in pokemon being called "jelly donuts" in the 4kids dub. that shit's garbage. id say equally that ruins the whole thing too.
the kids show dubs are probably the worst at that, especially pokemon, full episodes were changed up for american audiences.
i dont watch anime personally though but i always prefer the original audio track the way it was intended and filmed for my kaiju films.

only acceptable dub ill appreciate is spirited away but mostly because that's how i experienced it when it was new as a kid

cont
oh yeah one last point with dubs is they cant always match the same emotion and tonality as the original audio. id rather have that than some goofy westerner that hardly even cares about the source material

I watched anime once bro it's not that deep. I'd rather watch something with a dub because it's how I consume other media.

cont because I forgot to say it all

I also wont watch dubbed live tv shows (e.g. lots of netflix stuff recently, like Ragnorok or "How to sell drugs online fast"). It completely ruins it because the lip movements are out of sync.

I had to enable captions on a movie I was watching because my shit ass cheap soundbar would cut off anyone talking below a certain volume
Otherwise, I'm with you, OP
