Normies are offended by whatever the living room Jew tells to be offended by. They don't actually think about why something's offensive. Tomorrow, they could be told that, say, "goofball" is now a -ist or -phobic slur and they'd immediately go out and punch your kid for saying it. Op has a point. All these words were used at one point to categorize those with low iqs. Idiot was a scientific term at one point, same with retardation. I think its because retardation stuck around longer as a diagnosis. By then it was seen as a label for a class of people, rather than just remarking on someone's stupidity

where each new step in the chain was introduced as a politically correct institutional term to replace the old politically correct institutional term after people started using the old term as an insult.

Remember that normies are religious at the genetic level. Taking away christianity/islam/etc isn't going to magically make them enlightened , they will just start applying their genetic religiousity to secular aspects of life instead, causing secular aspects of life to take on a religious character. That's why all the feminist/gay/tranny/etc shit started to feel like a cult after atheism was normalized. When normal (ie genetically religious) people started joining these movements they brought that religious mentality with them. Christianity wasn't keeping normies dumb, it was keeping the rest of society intelligent by quarantining all the retards in a humane manner. It was basically a containment religion, and now that containment has been breached the things that used to be secular are now turning into religions as normies look for a new outlet for their genetic religiousity.

The word-worshipping that leads to the euphamism treadmill is just one example of this. It's basically a linguistic cargo-cult. Concepts matter while words are just arbitrary labels, but normies are linguistic thinkers rather than conceptual thinkers. To them words are more important than the concepts they represent, which is why they think they can change reality by changing the words we use to describe it. It's basically magical thinking. Politically correct language is just modern magic spells. If we just find the magic word for niggers then nigger fatigue will disappear.

The reason "retard" stuck was because it was the term in use when american culture went global. It was the one you heard in movies, on TV, on the internet etc and that galvanized it.

All the newer terms became derrogatory over time too, for example when I was at school kids would call each other special needs etc as an insult, but the pejorative use of those terms always died out after the next politically correct term was introduced (and immediately became the new slur) while retard lived on due to being immortalized by movies, TV, early internet culture etc.
