What's the deal with sugar in ketchup?

I've heard for years and years that ketchup has a lot of sugar in it. Why does that matter? Who is guzzling all this ketchup? I only use a tiny amount. I only need one packet if I'm eating fast food and I use it for fries or hash browns. But everyone's like watch out! Ketchup has sugar in it! But fries are made of potatoes and potatoes are made of starch and that's just chains of sugars, and then you're probably drinking soda with sugar in it, so is the ketchup really going to make a difference? Do some people just slurp the stuff straight out the bottle?

lol, actually i do chug half bottle in my mouth sometimes, i buy light ketchup because of this. i have IBS, I can't eat jackshit without shitting and farting out my brains. tomato-based foods are a rare exception that i can safely eat in any amount.

The blue-logo Heinz ketchup is my favorite, that one has no natural or artificial sweeteners in it. Tastes more ketchup-y than any other ketchup.
Unfortunately it's at least twice the price of normal Heinz and four times the price of off -label

The sugar is a preservative that ensures you can safely consume it safely, whether it has been routinely refrigerated or left out on a counter at room temperature.

Everything in the US has sugar added to it, even the bread.

When you see ketchup as the main ingredient on the label, you know that they're putting a lot of sugar in it

Sugary sodas and soft drinks are like this too. One of the things that made me stop drinking them was to do something like this myself over a decade ago.
>Working in a microbiology lab as an undergrad lab assistant
>One of my duties is to mix up the solutions they use for their various growth media
>Weighing out glucose to make a glucose solution
>Decide to look up how many grams of carbs are in a 12 oz can of Dr. Pepper, my favorite soft drink at the time
>Weigh out that many grams of glucose
>When I see the pile of sugar
>WTF!

just make your own ketchup, f4's. Add a big spoon of sugar to about 400/500g (like 2/3 of a 'standard' 700g bottle here in italy) of tomato sauce with a dash of vinegar. That's it.

the jew fears the homemade ketchup maker

Subway wasn't legally allowed to call their bread "bread" in Ireland because if bread has more than so much sugar it must be called a confection and not bread. Subway bread is more like a pastry than bread.

Sugar is not a preservative. They add preservatives to the ketchup. If you leave homemade ketchup on the counter it will spoil just like anything else

While it is normal for sugar to be in products, the US goes overboard with it. And another thing with American food products is the lack of natural ingredients in things. Ketchup in the US has a shit tonne of corn syrup instead of sugar and "natural flavours" which is a lie to American consumers to fool them into thinking they are adding natural ingredients but "natural flavours" is additives and chemical based flavouring.

Similar to Tango, there is literally no real orange in it in the US, outside the US (except Mexico) - Tango is a natural orange colour with real orange juices. In the US the "Natural flavours" comes up again, why is it so luminescent orange in colour? Well that is fake too.

Bread is full of sugar also.. which is just bad.

But one big major thing the US does is over spice things, you hear them talk about how bland things are outside the US - that is because Americans are growing up to accept over spiced foods - so over spiced they cannot taste the main ingredient anymore. So they think it is normal for food to be like this. Yet you could have a Chicken Vindaloo anywhere outside the US which is very spicey but you can still taste the chicken which makes it tasty as fuck.. the US it is just spice flavour and if lucky a hint of chicken, beef or whatever the main ingredient is. The only thing that is great with a fair bit of sugar is BBQ like ribs etc, they are done great and you can taste the main ingredient.. that is how food should be.

Sugar is a preservative in very high concentrations. I am the anon that made growth media here >>939504471

But it is a pretty high concentration beyond anything that isn't practically candy etc. Bacteria literally won't grow above a certain concentration of sugar. I think the sugar is so hydroscopic (attracted to water) that it dehydrates the bacteria. If you think about it most candy lasts a very long time and doesn't rot.

yanks wonder why over 90% of kids need dental work by the age 12, and why 48% of yanks are obese or higher with another 33% being overweight to under obese. that shit is not normal.

I used to get cavities all the time as a kid despite brushing and flossing. Then I cut out almost all refined sugars from my diet and haven't had a single cavity in like 10 years.

Adding sugar to anything with water in it will feed organisms, especially if you give them other nutrients like an entire tomato. The vinegar in ketchup has the most value as a preservative and it's still not enough.

This is across the board in american food. To put it bluntly, sugar is CHEAP AS FUCK. And it's addictive as fuck. So those two things mean big business and profit for the companies that make them.

Profit > Health
