There is a social contract. Conservatives see nothing wrong with the government being able to execute people for various reasons but if you need help with food then you need to do some humiliation ritual.

We produce far more food than can be eaten. It makes sense that in a functioning society that it provides the absolute most basic of necessity.

If there were some kind of food scarcity or we actually cut taxes by a huge margin so that citizens can give more on their own there would be a better argument to not fund simple social programs.

But instead we get more taxes and they don't even provide services anymore. It's the worst option. Then they take thst tax money and give it to the ultra wealthy in the form of tax breaks or needless industrial subsidies.

If someone was begging, they felt ashamed and would try to actually pay you back or provide some work to repay you. Nobody talked about it because it meant you were a failure, and if you were begging, it was for a damn good reason.

And you know what, they all go broke so they have to scrap the old plan and call it something else. Social security, medicaid, even regional transit in every single city, they're all broke.

When there's not enough to go around and not enough is produced, then force needs to be applied to the producers to make sure "they" have enough. "They" is the elites at the top, for a nation can't operate if government is broke. There's an old Soviet Russian diktat, "give what you can so they may have enough". This is of course at gunpoint.
