France was allied with Russia and had a duty to go to war, not to mention any opportunity to smash the Germans is not something the French are going to give up.

The British were bound to protect Belgian sovereignty and declared war shortly after they were invaded. There's an argument to make that Britain could have stayed out of the war but they probably would have joined anyway to stop France from falling. Which would have been a certainty without British involvement.
