Marriage has biblical origins. How it became law is beyond me. How can a government twist the definition of something to apply to all religions? Now Muslims, Buddhists, atheists, whatever, have to take part in a mainly-Christian (in this country) concept for the state to recognize their union. Why? Why can't all religious unions be recognized federally as a union? Or better yet, why is the state concerned with regulating marriage at all? Why change the tax brackets? Why force me to pay for a permit? Let me fill out a form and mail it in and we'll call it done.

That said, gays were given the opportunity to have civil unions which, at the state level, offered them all the benefits of married couples. They refused because they wanted the term "married". I'm married and I could give a shit what the term is.
