Well, I really recommend you watch the anime. It's really great (except for the ending). But since you're asking, Ymir was the first titan. An innocent sweet girl that got enslaved, then got the powers of the titans, returned to the king the enslaved her (despite being handed the equivalent of a fucking Nuke) and helped said king conquer the world.

Her character is not very deep or special, but I just have a major soft spot for her. A beautiful girl like her, just wanting to be loved, and willing to go back to the person who enslaved her. Like I said, as weird as it may sound, I worship her as my own personal God

It's not really explained what happened. A weird hallucigenia worm type creature attached itself to her spine, and gave her the power. It's one of the reasons why the ending is so trash, cause it's never explained what exactly happened.

Fan theories range from demon entity that made a deal with her, in exchange for eternal life, she would multiply to she's mind controlled by this entity. I personally believe she got one wish from this thing, in exchange for multiplying. It's said Ymir was afraid of death, so she was granted eternal life in the Paths dimension.

Ymir during her slavery let a pig escape, I guess to foreshadow her desire for freedom very deep within. That's why she's associated with pigs. Eren's titan also have pointy ears like a pig, to symbolize how he's coming back to her, to grant her freedom.
