First of all, look for DEB-based distros only. RPM-based are either meant for servers (like centos and shit) or for retards lacking sex. I've tried Debian, Mint, Ubuntu, Elementary OS and Kubuntu. For the last 5 years I've been using Kubuntu and for me it's the best distro: normal package system (DEB), nice plasma DE (is much more flexible and nice than gnome and unity), no jewish trackig and works without any need to constantly have sex with it.
The only thing I did I moved the bar to the left and above so it looks kinda Ubuntu-ish.

For a newbie I would recommend trying either Mint or Kubuntu. More like a matter of preference, but Kubunti is much more flexible.

I will never get back to Mac or Windows (aside from the PC gaming experience).

It was the better os (XP became usable only after sp1, and you didn't have to patch it up in order to uncap half open connections and get raw sockets back after sp2), but you do get an extra mile with Posready 2009 in terms of compatibility without the extra junk services from the server-oriented variety.
