The general rule though is to walk on the left side of the road when there is no sidewalk, this is so you can see oncoming traffic and keep a safe distance. My experience with this in USA has been the opposite. When there's a kid walking into me, often the parents will run and get them then tell them to watch where they're going. This also happens a lot when I'm walking along the beach and kids running into the water and right into my path, sometimes I knock them over cause it's a sudden mid-step interruption.

It depends. many streets in cities do have sidewalks. Those posts are about something else though: Feeling awkward walking in front of drivers at intersections without a traffic signal, cause you don't know if they will actually stop for the stop sign or crosswalk, and very often in my experience they will be creeping towards you while you're in the middle of the street, makes me flinch and stumble and then I walk slower to steady myself and I can feel them getting impatient. I am autistic and find it physically challenging to even navigate my body past other people at close range, so doing some kind of bending and twisting thing while also walking at the same time and avoiding touchign people is out of the question. Ok well I'm sorry for my earlier mean posts. What I do is just maintain my position on the right and walk forward. I don't make eye contact and just look above people's heads if they meander into my way. Most of the time they jump out of the way at the last second. But if they stay in my way then I plow through or check them. It's not my problem since I'm just walking in a straight line. The only exceptions are if it's an old person or someone with a child. Just walk forward and most people will move out of the way. Don't think about it too much because there is no meaning to it.
