It's that you don't realize how much of your personality is based on it and how you have to inject it into everything.
I was a right-winger when I was younger, back in my 20s. Wasn't raised to be, just went that route. Got into a big argument with the rest of my high school sociology class about how abortion should be illegal and everything.
I'd call myself a centrist now. Back in the day, I would have considered where I'm at now to be leftist. Because that's what has always driven the conservative movement - identity, and this us-versus-them mentality where if people aren't with you, they *must* be on the other side and feel the same way about you as you do about them. It was only after backing away that I realized there's more nuance than that - that the group I thought was "the left" was actually made up of a huge variety of views. I still don't like abortion and feel uncomfortable with gays or trannies but I can see where people are coming from now.
There's no need to inject politics into *everything*. Most of those you consider to be your opponents do it less than you think.
