I don't like how as a societal standard, we are not allowed to talk about level of addiction.
If you drank 3 beers a day for two years, you have absolutely no idea what the guy who drank 1.75 liters of vodka a day for 10 years went through. You do not belong at the same table.

maybe that's true, but both people should make an effort to relate to other people
it's a skill to be able to sit at ANY table & get something out of it, without it feeling like a chore or like walking on eggshells

im just basing it off real world experience
one of two things would happen if you place people like described in your OP together if the alcoholic tells them to fuck off
the 3 beers guy will either become a worse person or he'll think the alcoholic should go fuck himself.
Ive been friends with some nasty people in my time he could give less of a fucking shit about whag your problems were and made it very clear that they didnt care and as i continued to be friends with them i just became a worse person snd ended up hating them.
In the most rarest ocassions will the 3 beers guy sit down and think "man this guy has it rough"

your average person thinks their problems are their center.
They will only start to care and think about others if you approach it like a new born domesticsted animal. They will reciprocate emotions like that too.

probably true
some people are extremely prone to escalating or getting into pissing contests
but if you DO take the time to have patience and "approach it like a new born domesticated animal", it's often worth it
the pissing contests aren't in either person's best interest, you know?
people are just defensive and broken, not actually bad/evil/petty
