i recommend the tuttle book for learning the characters & getting a basic grasp of how it works & the differences from other languages
you can also listen to the michel thomas audio course, but i recommend reading the first few chapters of the tuttle book first, it will make the audio less confusing

the tuttle book is a great introduction and "for dummies" type book
you can move on to any other resource from there
