I heard burying a dead animal on top the corpses helps. It creates a red herring. The suspicious dirt spot can be explained by you burying the dead animal. You can just lie saying you felt bad for the animal, so you wanted to give it a proper burial or something. And it explains the smell as well. You will need to bury the corpses deeper than the animal just in case.

or you can hide the corpse in a desert.
