Anyway, I look at my relatives the people I related to by blood, and one thing in particular I felt was missing I guess is that I didn't really see anything that seemed relatively Americana. I guess I never really realized just how much my tastes have been shaped by it, but in some core aspect they have. I don't know if I would say it's all Americana, but the spirit is always there.

Like I was just thinking about Treasure Planet, it's the only example I can think of at the moment, I feel like the spirit and style of the film are somewhere between European and early American, maybe european Explorer.

Honestly I don’t really know what to think about Legends of the Fall, I think I am almost like a combination of all three brothers so it doesn’t exactly work for me.

Really I feel like a person like me is not really represented all that often in the media and such and it brings me to a conflict I have quite often that I feel uncertain about but I feel conflicted between possessing traits which make me more similar to Europeans, versus yet despite this how I am like an American too, and often these two parts of myself are kind of in conflict with each other, I haven’t found a way to resolve them yet.

I think I’m actually quite complicated. I question if Tristian is really all that intelligent or whatever the case may be, he doesn’t feel a yearning or need to spend time thinking deeply about subjects, or at least he doesn’t really pursue knowledge outwardly too much. In fact, everyone says he’s wild and rebellious, adventuresome, but it never goes into detail as to what exactly this entails, the story never really explains in depth a lot of what he actually does, and instead just gives shots of him that suggest he’s “wild” and untamed but never really explains more then that

I feel like I would need somehow to understand my intellectual side, but then I want to somehow stop the need to learn and read so much and reach some sort of “final” objective outlook on the world, but it’s quite difficult and I don’t know if it’s possible, it’s not exciting or adventuresome.

I guess my main point, what I was trying to get at is that at my core I have very strong values, but it’s more then that, I have always felt deeply compelled to do the right thing, but on a sort of ultimate grand scale of good versus evil I guess that is more complex then simply choosing to jay walk or not, or whether you should listen to and obey authority, or bring “honor” and “shame” to your family, like social traditions and such, don’t really cover it I think.

I don’t really relate to most people in this regard…while it has always been a deeply motivating factor for me. I used to think I was an “idealist” because I relate the most to the INFP personality type. But I don’t think necessarily an idealist reading deeper about it, but I think that’s generally why people like me aren’t really represented or given much respect.

It’s sort of like Luke Skywalker in a sense I guess, but it brings me back my point, is Luke really an idealist? I simply believe in ultimate good and evil and that there is a possibility to live in a better world, but I guess there’s not really a word or a term for that exactly. To many men like me are probably seen as the enemy because I have too strong of virtues to be easily controlled. I can just hear the scorn this illicits to my response to the world. I seek to understand the world deeply, and I hold off making judgements too hastily, still my outlook on reality would seem contemptible to others.


Thus, I don’t really see how that movie really represents me at all.

I guess I am virtuous, more than being “idealist” it’s there that I guess the MBTI doesn’t really work for me.

It’s here I would say that I sort of am more like an European in a sense that I think, I am almost like a knight, practicing chivalry and knighthood or something I GUESS, whatever is the most conclusive to my goals and morals I don’t really spend my time on pursuits I feel are not as meaningful

Oh yeah and there’s that scene where Brad Pitts character tries to wrangle and take the wild horse but it won’t be tamed I think this is a metaphor for Tristian’s own inner spirit and how just like the horse he can’t seem to tame, for the most part. It also signifies forces in the world he can’t quite wrestle or grapple with but it still ends up being his own restless sprint. Pretty good symbolism I think, I don’t know if that’s obvious or not but I’m not sure if I fully understand the rest of the movie but since I understand that I think I am capable of understanding. Obviously Brad Pitt was cast in that role because he is considered to fit the character the best, and at least it caters to his sex symbol status which I think more so is probably a big reason he took the role. I wonder if Tristian would be so popular with women in real life if he wasn’t played by someone like Brad Pitt.

Also I can’t help but feel like his characters privilege sort of shows in the movie, sure they’re only ranchers but you get a sense they’re probably fairly successful ones at that and Tristian is the son of a wealthy rancher who kind of spends a lot of time idling around. Back then though, it was probably considered attractive, high status and dependable enough of a lifestyle for Brad Pitt to be an eligible bachelor in the area, if he came into contact with anyone else that is.

I feel like travelling is kind of seen as a high-status pursuit and activity, back then I guess Tristian couldn’t move to the city and try working different jobs and following other pursuits but education was probably more affordable back then so he could have done something like that, but I can’t help but feel like his what went into travelling was partially due to the fact that it is considered sort of high status and I feel like that went into the novelists head when he wrote it because he knew certain types of people would respond to that like “oh that’s a commendable

“Thats commendable and well to do, I sure like my men who grasp all the trappings of social status” I mean I don’t know, I appreciate the setting, location, and period the movie is set in because it fits various themes from the movie, but it seems like it would be hard to write a character like Tristian in that time period because there probably weren’t as many outlets for being wild, and adventurous. I just feel like for me it’s hard to define what adventurous means in the modern world when most places have been explored and settled does true exploring and adventure really exist anymore? I guess exploring on those ships was pretty adventurous.

I guess it was still pretty adventurous back then, and I guess that’s part of the point because that still had a place in the world, since there weren’t as many photographs or videos it was a lot more novel and interesting to see a place in person.

I feel like nothing is really long lasting or has any staying power anymore, one thing I’ve noticed in recently is that it seems it has become increasingly common to categorized everything based on the time period it was created and thus define it by some generation, so that nearly everything is defined by generations. And also most things only have staying power based on how modern or relevant they are in some way to the times. There are hardly any ‘timeless’ works these days

But then, I can’t believe how far away the 90s are as an example, but still, there’s something I find uncomfortable about everything being defined in this manner, as merely products of generations but it’s probably exactly what the mainstream media wants you to do.

I don’t think the past should be completely discarded and likewise, the world hasn’t really changed that much altogether in some ways, trends still recycle of the same tired formulas

I have this disconnection between regular people and most jobs that exist.

For example, I’ve encountered a fair amount of women who want to be psychologists or even lawyers, this creates sort of a disconnect for me because I kind of have either disdain for those professions, or not much connection to them and can’t see myself really associating with them as an example. I similarly hate hospitals and doctors and a great deal of women want to be nurses or some shit.

So that leaves me unable to carry on like a normal adult in a way almost, but I don’t know, maybe there is a select sphere of careers I can associate with somehow.

I just don’t understand why so many women want to be psychologists or put so much focus on schooling because I think a lot of these women don’t actually meet their lofty goals but in the meanwhile they put all this importance on schooling or social connections

So yeah, bascially I still don't understand this movie, Tristan realizes that he can't be tamed so he accepts this part of himself and decides to travel the world to find himself or something.

I didn't realize it but not being able to be tamed pretty much carried to all facets of his life, though I don't quite understand what that means for sure, in modern society he would probably just be diagnosed with ADHD, is that what is basically inferred by this characteristic? It's hard to say for sure what it means. I have a few ideas.

But I realize this is why he sends the native bracelet as a gift to Susanna and why he has an affinity for native Americans and why he later marries the native girl.


Shit that makes me think of myself a little bit. For one, insane asylum existed in Tristans era, so like you'd almost run the risk of being sent to one possibly if you're too rebellious, but he was lucky he lived on a farm. It suited those characteristics to an extent.

It makes me think like, am I supposed to look for someone like a native girl? Should I bother with white women? But see, Susanna seemingly accepts Tristans untamable nature, so I don't really see the problem.

I don't know if I fucked up posting about all that stuff I just wasn't sure.

After watching some of those videos that are more european-centric, I am not really sure anymore.

My reasoning and rational was that I had traits and characteristics which are more understood and accepted in certain countries, namely Europe and America, though that's not entirely true. There are some examples in Japanese culture and society which are supported that I find myself relating to as an example. I guess I just use Europe and America primarily as an example because I don't think there are many other places that would tolerate me and where I could easily live, as I have experienced a lot of negative experiences from people that were from different parts of the world, and I just have a really strong sense that I wouldn't really be tolerated anywhere else.

Different countries and societies tend to typically support and encourage certain personality traits and characteristics, so it's very natural for me to go when self examine myself or noticing discrepancies in my behavior and responses from others has made me basically go "oh that's because, that's more like a European thing" that's more of a "European trait or experience to have" versus American.

Which, I don't know with 100% certainty, like I know to some extent but not in depth, like I feel I understand American culture a lot more, but it's harder for me to understand European culture as easily or make a final judgement on it.

Mostly when it comes to Europe, it becomes more complicated because I think I experience another discrepancy in that I think I am a little in between Germany and the rest of Europe.

Like the differences, and reasons for their being conflict in Europe, I think I would have to say I experience and would be effected by if I were to associate myself with Europe in anyway.

Like I watched Last Kingdom and Vikings and gosh it helps me understand Europe a bit more but despite the European union I can't help but feel like it's almost the equivalent of the middle ages for me and I'm turn between all these factions, guilds, and kingdoms, groups of people, tribes and the like.

It's a very noticeable aspect of Europe to me. I'm not 100% sure why.

It's hard to explain though because my traits and characteristics that make up who I am are mine alone and uh, I don't see them simply in regards to how they are treated or associated with a certain group, tribe, clique, or greater country. I don't really define myself by status of the country I resign or align myself with exactly either.
