The question really is, why did Christianity last this long to begin with? And the answer is that the Bible was rejected in favor of papal decree and folk spirituality with a Christian glaze. When the Trinity replaces the father gods, Mary replaces the mother gods, and the various saints replace the various gods, it’s easy for the populace to slowly adopt your new order, and the actual bible only becomes a occasional and carefully selected source to pull from along with the church fathers and writings of the saints.
