I see living trolls every day, revolting specimens no self-respecting erudite or human would willfully reproduce with, lest their children have a chromosomal disorder. Eventually it will be a matter of we simply can't reproduce across these class/racial lines. Only BBC can penetrate the fat of an ogre's vagina, etc. What are humanity's inevitable fantasy races?

With the advent of transhumanist technologies humanity will branch out into various novel lines, the racial competition over the same resources will be even more intense. It's hard to predict what racial configurations will triumph in which environments.

Sorry dicklets out there, there is more to life. I'm just pointing out that in the competition of cocks, BWC is supreme. Something makes me think the op doesn't understand this fact, like probably that he's a memeflag trying to slip a subliminal demoralization into a slide question. wow may have eclipsed it now, probably because of item shop, not subs. it was just that EQ's budget was incredibly small and it was basically an overnight success.

Sony almost cancelled the entire project before release, thinking "who is gonna play a 3D MMO and pay a subscription for it?" Remember, this is 1999. Internet was not widespread (I played on dialup) and many computers didn't have discrete graphics cards.

I played it on my eMachines 500 with a Voodoo2, Pentium III with 512GB RAM lol. Was pretty beast for the time in my memory, miss Ragnarok Online too.

Anyways, it was such a massive success that they had to get their backbone ISP in Cali to do emergency expansion to their infrastructure to handle the bandwidth. Also had to ramp up support staff for customer service due to the unexpected popularity.

My uncle unironically works at Microsoft for almost 30 years now, he told me tons of those guys would show up to work dead tired sleeping through meetings (a couple even got fired) from staying up all night playing EQ.

For those who want to get a similar fix now, Monsters and Memories + Adrullan Online Adventures are the closest thing. Both are in active development with alpha testing.

there were a lot of things that would still show the stone UI until velious. it wasn't really fully usable until then.

i only learned about it by accident when i was unironically sipping on a bang's root beer and almost spilled it on my board, accidentally hit the f10 key and was like woah. also saved teh keyboard from a nasty spill.

yup, it's hilarious that such a iconic and successful game was basically running on duct tape.

Sony gave them a simple "racing game" 3d engine to use to make the game, hence the goofy physics and movement at times. a lot of the game used MS access database and Excel sheets.

it would take 45 mins to restart the dev server to test changes lol. but despite all that, it was such a banger. i still listen to the soundtrack when i want to feel nostalgic, it's so grand.

p99 is okay but i do think you end up with the problem of EQ is a solved game at this point. just neckbeards playing (multiboxing), camping their spawns and even nostalgia has its limits. i can play it because EQ hits a certain spot for me, but its hard to introduce it to others who haven't, the warts stick out more.

I really like Adrullan Online Adventures, it's basically voxel EQ and perfect balance of challenge, fun, and QoL. MnM is also great, torn between which I enjoy more.

The sad thing about MMOs today is that they're silent. I recently jumped into RS3 for shits and giggles and the only time people talk is at the Dungeoneering hole at the summer beach event, and even that's not a guarantee.
This is compared to how the game was in 2002-2008 when you could go down to Musa Point to fish for lobbys/swordys and have near /pol/-tier conversations with complete strangers. It would be packed to the brim with so many people that everyone would clipping and flickering. Same for the All Chat in WoW back in the day, when there was always something going on.

The good memories comes from the people you met along the way. How you interacted with the community. With that missing, there's no reason to go back.
FFXIV is the most populated MMO out there right now, and it's public chats are moderated by the most anal retentive tranny jannies you can imagine. You will get struggle sessioned, you will get a "call out" and you will be threatened with a ban for just about any inane thing.

I can't say if private servers are worth it, though. Population on those are extremely thin.

old school runescape you make friends by talking to randoms while getting xp at random places. Players are not as social as they were in 2007 or before and zoomers get weird sometimes when you talk to them, but overall it still exists. That game requires you to be social to succeed at a certain point. But this is of course is the biproduct of doing monotonous tasks over and over.

this is 100% true, and its also about the time period we experienced it in. I played FFXI from 2005-2010. There was initially no wiki or guides, there was no discord or any of that. Everything was in game. You had to ask people or get them to show you how to do something and there was a big sense of community, exploration, and unsolved mysteries of the in game world. I did just find a private server for FFXI with a very healthy population but it doesn't change that everyone knows how to do everything already now. There's no more mystery.

In OSRS I started talking to randoms during a starfall event behind the Draynor bank. I impressed the leader of some guild and "she" both invited me to join and gave me a bond as a gift.
She found my ability to be so candidly social in the modern era to be impressive. So if just being mildly friendly and telling millennial jokes was enough to get a 14 million GP gift from some rando chick, then OSRS is not doing so well either on that front, either.

Zoomers get weird about social interactions because they instinctively understand what an absolute mine field social interactions have become in the current clown world era. They know they could say literally anything and have it explode in their faces, so they say nothing. They also grew up from a very early age in the peak period of internet grooming. So they also have an instinctual weariness of overly friendly strangers.

Raided with a bunch of guys like that back in 2000, was an amazing time not just cause of the EQ world, but that so many people all over the world of all types played it, doctors, stewardesses, junkies, didn't matter, all caught the EQ bug. Was a trip meeting some of these folks in RL at the guild meet up. Truly a lost era.

The game itself was janky, but the system of need between players was so well done, be it on purpose or accident, that just grinding out a few levels or AAs somewhere with people you'd always walk away with either enemies, friends or new acquaintances. Modern day WoW is a single player MMO with some rabid cunts chiming in any time you have a forced interaction.

The last time I played WoW was little over a decade ago, and it was bad back then, too. Social interaction was mostly dead, and Find-a-Party with cross-server meant you were never going to see any of these faggots ever again.
Which meant their only concern was XP/hr and loot. WoW killed the MMO a long time ago.

THJ is in a big lawsuit atm with Daybreak games cause they monetized all the transactions in the game for RL cash. This caused a cascade effect and a lot of the private servers are down, including TAKP and the trannoid-run Project Quarm. P99 still is up, due to a longstanding agreement they have with DBG.
