>>22936370wow may have eclipsed it now, probably because of item shop, not subs. it was just that EQ's budget was incredibly small and it was basically an overnight success.
Sony almost cancelled the entire project before release, thinking "who is gonna play a 3D MMO and pay a subscription for it?" Remember, this is 1999. Internet was not widespread (I played on dialup) and many computers didn't have discrete graphics cards.
I played it on my eMachines 500 with a Voodoo2, Pentium III with 512GB RAM lol. Was pretty beast for the time in my memory, miss Ragnarok Online too.
Anyways, it was such a massive success that they had to get their backbone ISP in Cali to do emergency expansion to their infrastructure to handle the bandwidth. Also had to ramp up support staff for customer service due to the unexpected popularity.
My uncle unironically works at Microsoft for almost 30 years now, he told me tons of those guys would show up to work dead tired sleeping through meetings (a couple even got fired) from staying up all night playing EQ.
For those who want to get a similar fix now, Monsters and Memories + Adrullan Online Adventures are the closest thing. Both are in active development with alpha testing.
