Cats were used to eat mice that ate our grain and brought disease.
Dogs were used to defend our livestock from other wild life.

If I'm not mistaken, the males are even typically sterile. It's all because of how coloring genes are transmitted in cats. The orange and black coloring only come on the X chromosomes.
