Maybe he is just taking care of something that happened to him. Try to be empathetic, and when you talk with him again ask him how's has been going things in his life
I also have a female friend who stopped talking to me. I'm used to it, I didn't even believe her when she said that she wanted to "meet me without any further interest". Everyone wants something, and if you are not use for someone, you'll get discarded
