It depends what you eat but generally yes. If you're doing a basic meat, starch, veg meal you can prob come out more ahead, but for something like a burrito it's cheaper just to buy it rather than gether all the necessary ingredients. I think there is some economies of scale involved which works better if you have a family, which of course i do not

I don't believe this without a breakdown of cost. Even if you were right, the pre-prepared burrito loses in terms of quality. Whether frozen from a grocery store or fresh from a restaurant, it'd be light on the meat filling; all bread and slop sauce to charge you more for less.

If you cook your own food and only save $100, then you aren't calculating your food costs correctly. My target food cost is $1 per serving. So for the sake of argument, if a fast food meal is $10 for one person, that means it costs 10x as much to get fast food instead of cooking.

50 hours a month is fair. It probably equals a little more than an hour per day in effort. I'd say it's closer to $300 saved though. If you have a family however, it's about the same amount of effort as cooking for yourself and can save you over $1,000 a month. I'm sure the girl in the OP has no kids, husband, or even a boyfriend or she'd be more interested in cooking them.

No. You save way more than 100 dollars cooking. You can also meal prep and make several meals at once.

Millenials/gen z are so stupid and spoiled it's unreal.

Even if her statement was true, can you imagine these minimum wage workers working for 10 dollars an hour post tax, and then going to spend 30 dollars on prepared food in a day? You just lost 3 hours of your daily pay. Yes I know people that never keep food in the home and go out to breakfast on their way to work, eat at the employee cafeteria and pick up taco bell on the way home.

I cook about once a week and have leftovers. So it's about one hour big prep four times a month, plus five minutes reheat every other day. That comes to about 5 hours total prep time a month.

I save at least $3 a meal, so at 2 meals a day, that's $180 savings.

$180 / 5 hours is $36/hour, which isn't a horrible wage. Plus I like my food better than anything I could get out.

If I were to eat out good food, I would be saving at least $5 a meal, so $300 / 5 hours = $60/hour, which isn't bad for a mid-tier chef.

Some of them are just that stupid. They look at the whole grocery bill from a mega shopping trip and act like that's their entire food budget without regard to portioning.

My sister says it's cheaper to go out to eat than to make the same food at home because it's only 12 dollars going out to eat, but if you buy the spices, sauces, chicken, rice, etc individually then it's like 60 dollars. I tell her she's dumb because the spice and sauce are the expensive parts and those should last you a month minimum, but she can't comprehend leftovers, or she counters with "I DON'T WANT TO EAT THAT SAME DISH EVERY DAY!"

Or she swears that meal delivery services like blue apron are cheaper because it's less than her grocery bill. But I tell her it can't possibly be cheaper because of all of the extra costs invovled in shipping, packaging, preparation, and extra middle men, and if she just portioned out a bag of fresh chicken, it would be cheaper dollar per pound.

no the problem with cooking is not that it doesnt save money

it should save you money on paper but the reality is

if you get 3x as much food for the same price as 1 plate at chipotle youll just eat the equivalent of 3 chipotle bowls when your serving is bigger

negating the effect of getting large quantities of food because youll just eat more when you have access to it in your fridge

so mostt people will spend more if they go grocery shopping over being a bitch who goes out to restaurants

I bet the tortillas I make myself are better than the ones you buy. It's just corn flour and water after all, but I probably spend more on higher quality flour (yes from Mexico) than the average tortilleria in Mexico.

They are hyper urban mutts born after 2000. They can't fathom you can make really simple but great tasting dishes in a short time using ingredients worth less than $2 for a weekday hot meal. Every meal on every day of the week needs to be some ethnic restaurant like dish. They literally can't fathom you can make a simple vegetable pasta dish in about 10 minutes. Or a stew you can eat for several meals over the next week with different side dishes (potatoes, pasta, rice). They probably don't regard frying leftover potatoes from the day before with sliced sausage and beaten eggs as a meal.

it's not about which option is cheaper, and it's not even about "what your time is worth", it's about whether or not you would USE the time saved by paying for restaurant food on making more money than the extra you spend
