I really think it's a lack of discipline + fashionable nihilism that does this to young people. The depression will slowly creep in and he probably won't even know why for the longest time. OP's story is made up. It's very, very hard to get on disability for a condition like "chronic fatigue" that's very hard to prove, and usually requires years and years of medical records and shit to corroborate it.

Lot's of parents like to let their live-in adult children stay without taking any rent from them... but for the express purpose of helping them save money to eventually get a place of their own for their possible future family.

Their burden is now upon the taxpayer. You can't just create matter out of nothing, and you can't feed and house people via magic, someone is going to have to pay for it. This would be true even outside of capitalistic systems, it's just a bare-bones truth of this world that life takes effort and energy expenditure to sustain itself. Taking the dole when you don't really need it quite literally turns you into a leech on society. You'd have to be completely bereft of morals to support doing something like that.
