yes that's exactly right it draws the oils out.
its also amazing for iced tea because u can get a lot of lemon flavour without making it too acidic :)
I think most ppl just a use couple drops of lemon extract in like 500ml of simple syrup as an easy sub these days but I think its worth making ur own the traditional way if its for like a jug or 2 of lemonade not serving 200 drunk assholes.

yeah I guess there's some similarities. this is kinda like if you did that but threw away the meat and kept the wet mushy salt xD
