How much does /biz/ keep in their war chest?
By this I mean funds that are immediately available, completely liquid and ready to go for anything at any time. If your car broke down tomorrow, or your boiler popped or a window broke this is the emergency money you'd use to get the specialist to come patch it up same-day.
What's the number?
Personally I'm thinking 5k, but that's only because I can't think of anything that can cost more than 5k immediately without giving me time to pool more resources.
Oh and pic semi-related, came up when I googled war chest.
A few decades of living expenses
Such is necessity as a link holder. This is a long battle.
>>60503081>A few decades of living expensesReally? Why don't you just put that cash in something more stable then when it's not being used then?
IMO the war chest should be as tiny as possible to allow as much of your income to be invested.
>>60503078 (OP)bout 250 thousand, rest is locked up in real-estate
>>60503081>>60503118Jesus I thought my modest 5k would be too much to keep in the backpocket, but you guys are making me think it's too little.
>>60503078 (OP)30k, Europe. A new electrical outlet costs 1000 (970 taxes, 30 for the tradie). Bureaucrats made electrical DIY illegal for us, and most of the rest needs to be audited and certified.
Also, emergency climate measures tend to come abruptly, and are very expensive for us poor people.
>>60503086As a Chainlink holder we are locked in a battle of attrition with a supernatural force that predates mankind itself.
If you’re not holding Chainlink 3 months of living expenses is probably fine
I don't think im the typical bizer, high paying job, married, own rental properties, take profits, actually want to get rich not gamble on shitcoins. i'll use 5k monthly core expenses to give concrete numbers, i use the same multiple just of my expenses
3x total monthly withdrawal - leave in checking
in additional i have 2 months of all supplies - yes all including water and power and cash
both HYSA
60k 6x actual monthly budget counting travel, eating out, ect
30k 6x more core expenses - existing but not luxury
I put my same monthly expense number into a fund meant to buy whatever i find a good deal on. currently has 200k, put 100k into the sp500 a couple months ago on it's last dump.
I have a separate RE fund with about 200k in it, also funded from selling RE that will be used for another rental property when i find one. not currently adding more to this one.
>>60503196thats literally everyone here though. always the meme 100k a year, lawyer/doctor/stem etc. its the most used up ragebait there is
>>60503126it depends, in my case i've got multiple rental properties. in the last 12 months i've spent over 80k on various issues including a roof, paint, concrete work and a bunch of small stuff like plumbing and electrical. you need a war chest for that. on the plus side, it cashflows so its not a big deal.
>>60503214you being here makes it super obvious you're just baiting
>>60503126kek, nah don't stress. i am all cash waiting for the big kahuna market crash that is coming any day in the next two weeks. normally i wouldn't have that much cash sitting around. i'm also getting about 5.1% interest from the bank on it, so it isn't all bad.
>>60503078 (OP)I keep $40k in my emergency fund. If some illegal bastard runs a redlight and totals my car, I can buy another one without having to wait for insurance to pay out.
Living in Houston sucks donkey balls.
>>60503255>5.1% interest from the bank on itNice. That's a sweet bank!
Anything above 5% is good IMO.
>>60503078 (OP)I have $2000 in my high-yield savings account as my emergency fund. It's the universal amount that'll allow you to survive three months or even a year if you play your cards right
30k, anything over that I gamble on stonks
>105k AUD in one savings account at 5%
>20k AUD in another savings account at 4.9%
>roughly 10k in physical cash in mattress
The majority of this will be used as a down payment when I finally have enough to invest in the Great Aussie Housing Ponzi though. After I get on the housing laddah and secure a seven figure mortgage I’ll put all my savings in the offset account and use all my equity mate to buy more and more houses.
>>60503714Why 2 savings accounts? Why not just shove everything in the 5'er?
I used to hold 0, then an emergency saddled me with like 30k debt that took years to pay off
Now i still hold 0
I normally have around a thousand in a checking account, the rest is either in a crypto wallet or brokerage account. I have two cars, one's a Volvo and the other is a Honda so they rarely break down and if I need a new appliance or something $1k should cover it. I'd just sell crypto if I really needed more money immediately
>>60503764What emergency? Like I said in OP I need examples of situations to push my war chest up.

>>60503078 (OP)29 year old I keep 224k in liquid cash & 358k in short term bonds. Dad died 2 years into retirement.
>>60503846It’s kinda crazy you could withdraw three percent annually and never run out of money.
>>60503756Only get 5% on the balance up to 100k, anything over that is .25%. I’ve just let it accrue over the last year or so because there’s a stipulation that to get that “bonus interest” the balance at the end of each month has to be higher than the start of the month. Everything I save from my job goes into the second account now.
>>60503078 (OP)$5k immediately
$25k line of credit available
$75k in 10 days
$250k in 10-20 days
$500k, I need a few months
I keep 6k in my savings immediately liquid. 20k is in sgov which acts as my hysa. My home's rent is only $900 in California so I don't need a whole lot liquid, majority of networth in equities
>>60503220>>60503851i dont think the poors realize there are over 20 million millionaires in the US. that's 1 in 20 people. doctors, lawyers, business owners, landlords, tech employees exist and aren't just a meme right?
>>60504901What is inflation and why is your "milion" not worth the ammount of 0 behind number.
Still better then waging.
>>60503078 (OP)What’s the definition of liquid anyway? There’s a common idea that gold is very liquid but I found this to be false. At least relative to other assets like BTC that can be readily used as currency or exchanged for it. Gold on the other hand, can’t buy shit with it except pawn it.
Still, interesting question OP. I’m thinking it depends on geography/social conditions since the answer should be longest you’ve been without a stable job at any point in your life.
Also, what should be in the war chest? Currency? Gold? BTC? Others?
>>60503078 (OP)This thread is about literal war chests now. Mine is carved by some backstreet indonesians and is quite lovely wood work. I keep $200US, a bunch of my local money, a spare bank card, my passport and a knife in mine. I need some precious metals.
Credit card for emergencies so realistically unlimited for real life stuff. 13k cash flow monthly before tax and increasing. 140k portfolio.
