Ad based revenue streams work mostly on hypercasual games which have high retention and possible viral spread.
For everything else you should generally have some inapp packages, this is where the money is.
Also marketing your game is 95% of the work. I saw real shit make it, and good stuff fail, because how marketing intensive the field is.
Expect to pump atleast 5 digits into marketing because revenue scales exponentially with reach.
