Is the eurozone an optimal currency area?
According to economists in the past (including EU economists) agreed that it wasn't, in fact it was consensus a the time that it wasn't as the single currency was not an economic but political project.
Many economists now agree that after many decades under the single currency that the eurozone is an optimal currency area like the United Stated as the different eurozone states have the same macro cycles, unified labor market, inflation,... however there is no consensus as this topic is relatively controversial amongst economists

What do you think /biz/?

Btw as German i think the Euro made germans significantly more poor, while beeing an overall plus for rich germans and souther europe. Despite media and the mass saying elsewise.
Because italians never used to be so rich and their currency would inflate away like crazy. But germans could travel in europe and be like kings before the euro come into effect. The target 2 inbalance supports my thesis.
Generally the Euro also wont be as stable as they like and the rally will be short lived since the rates are already down.

can you explain the target 2 balance stuff in full detail?
I've heard that before but I didn't really get what it was, my understanding is that it's a mechanism with the goal of avoiding currency shortages

germany were big power in europe, but it had nothing real to offer. everyone could do same things but didint have something at the time.
now that everyone is in same economic area you lost your powers against your neighbors and everyone is rich. the ones who didint have machines or engineers do have them now. If we were seperate economies we would compete and it would only cost us. nigeria might come and take our profits as they had all the same chances, but most importantly every country would compete and we would all lose.

it might be as costly to travel anywere in europe as it used to travel in germany but if you go outside of EU boarders it's cheap for everyone in EU.

if we would open the floodgates to other countries they would suck out our wealth and be part of our economy. we dominate almost whole world in wealth. its not that germany got poor its that EU got more wealthy.

EU sucks but because of it we are all much wealthier. you have delusional toughts of the past and because of that you cant appreciate things you have. cheap labour is killing your economy as manufacturing power but atleast now some of it might be near you and pay to same bank you pay to. if we were not forced to buy german cars everyone would have better chinese for cheaper. your economy is still here because EU forces other EU countries to support you.

well, pull yourself by the bootstraps and you will succeed.
when you are done, you have no reason to plame unions and governments.
You can do it.
