Besides joining the army, what's something a desperate person can do for a decent wage? Got laid off a few months ago and shit is looking bleak. I'm also too old for job corps.

I did the army thing, the issue is the job gets stupidly tedious and boring real fast. It's sort of like a well paid amazon-fufillment-center job.
The army has a CD which gives you a fixed 30% annual return (which no one uses cause they're stupid AF) and combined with signing bonuses (mine was $90,000) you can come out with a good chunk of change, but most people don't because they're retards who spend it a faster then they get it.

Joining the Air Force? If you're going to do a government job, choose an easy one with easy hours.

My experience was on-call processing of soldiers who were deploying tomorrow, constantly putting out fires, and expanding the building computer network, and I was a medic.

The weird combination of skills and being able to fix infrastructure problems meant that the officers in charge always wanted me inside of a building and would refuse to give me back to my unit.

Honestly, and speaking in strictly financial terms only, the military is not a bad option if you're smart and plan it all out. Predictable, on-time paychecks with regular increases - it's usually a few dollars extra every paycheck then one big raise around Jan/Feb if congress votes for it; and they always do. Housing is free (sometimes better than free if you get BAH), food is free, NO TAXES on shopping at the base dept stores and commissary (actually good desu and your family gets it too). Pick a smart mos/rate and you even get a decent sign on bonus + re-enlistment bonus. And to top it all off, probably the best healthcare plan you could ever get in America. God bless TriCare. There's a reason why whores who are in the know baby-trap milfags. Texas Roadhouse also gives you a FREE MEAL on Veteran's Day. THAT IS ANY STEAK YOU WANT ANON. Going Military FI/RE is very easy and *almost* automatic even. Also the TSP C Fund is essentially a carbon copy of the $SPY ETF. Only goes up babeeey

Don't get me wrong of course, I said strictly in financial terms only. You are a slave otherwise. A no shit slave. And I mean the kind of slave where (((they))) can absolutely fuck your shit up if you don't comply with orders, to include straight up "restricting" your ass and/or not paying you. Actual federal prison in the very worst of cases. Shit's kinda fucked up sometimes and it's very likely you'll see something you don't wanna see, and not in the fun way.

Should I commission into the military? Is it worth it?

Checked. Commissioning is FAR better than enlisting. If you have to join the military, definitely do it that way. You're still a slave, but at least you rank above all the other slaves. For some reason, the military values paper pushers a lot more than the enlisted who, you know, actually work lmao, so you get paid literally tripled the amount.

Try to get a normie ass corporate job first though

That would be the most common way. If you're young and single (not joking) they can also send your ass to the academy to get a degree. If you're a failure of a young professional (doctor in residency, lawyer, dentists, clergy; that sort of thing) you can also commission into a staff corps. If you're gullible you'll fall for one of the enlisted to officer programs they seldom award.
