I think that's called being really stupid. It ties up a ton of equity in the property, not to mention taxes, fees, interest, and just opportunity cost in general. It doesn't improve their quality of life much, if anything it worsens it because now they have to slave away just to make the installments.

are these in Australia? seems bleak. my father died last year and I'm inheriting the house I grew up in in suburban New York. it's crazy how expensive everything has become. I could probably sell for 700k, but I've only ever lived here and it's nice still being in the house, keeping that connection.
