Retail investing is a new phenomenon. People are used to keeping their money in a savings account instead of risking it in the market.

180k debt on his mortgage? If so that's not bad, if he has a decent disposable income.

Ive got 30k in student loan debt but i have 10k in USD for savings between my 401k and HSA along with 0.1BTC and 580 LINK. Technically im -10k in networth but it doesnt matter as long as my student loans are only 75 bucks per month and i can pay it off anytime.

Net worth is subjective

Baby, I don't need dollar bills to have fun tonight

I don't need no money
As long as I can feel the beat
I don't need no money
As long as I keep dancing

>Retail investing is a new phenomenon
It really isn't. 401k's came about in 1980, and retail brokerage firms like Schwab, Fidelity, and Vanguard have been around even longer. I entered the workforce in 1988 and have never had an employer without a 401k plan.
>keeping their money in a savings account
The last generation about which that was true was the forgotten generation (children during WW2) - my parents' generation. All the baby boomers I know invested into their 401k's and also had brokerage accounts where they invested further.

it's probably mostly women. there is a savings gender gap across all ages. they like to blame it on wages, but realistically women just spend way more. you very rarely hear about a woman who is knowledgable about investing.

The only reason I'm still here with npc is because I just want to get rid of my debts, I can't enjoy anything I earn ffs
