So you only get to keep the stocks for as long as you work for microsoft? How des that even work? I suppose it's like having a company car yes, obviously the car gets taken away once you no longer work there, but the car is used for work related-activities. Stocks have no use if you don't own them so what is even the point or the legal definition of this activity where your employer can "pretend" that you own stocks but not really?

Supposedly Microsoft was hands off with many developers, compared to Nintendo and Sony.
Studios like RARE, The Initiative, and others have had the time and money to produce games like Everwild and Perfect Dark on their own but had nothing to show after five or six years in development.

Unvested stock is stock they intend to pay you based on a schedule they provide you.


When I joined google they gave me 200k of invested stock. If U think I can just quit after a week and keep that 200k ur retarded. They vest it on a schedule they provide you, at which point it becomes yours.

MSFT employee here. It's different for every company. For MSFT, after your annual evaluation you get a cash bonus (that's deposited immediately) and a stock bonus which is some amount of dollars converted into shares at today's price. You don't get these shares immediately. You get a chunk of them every 3 months for 5 years, so a total of 20 payments (they "vest" at this rate). If you resign/get fired, you lose all future vests. Just to get a sense for it my last cash bonus was ~20k and the stock bonus ~30k. Since the stock keeps going up this works really nicely. If it goes down you kinda get screwed but that's they way it is.
