There's a million videos on youtube that discuss this. I live in Bangkok and have loose a budget of about $1500 per month. $500 for rent, $60 for utilities, $500 for groceries/eating out, $60 for transportation, $150 for my gf's family, and $250 for fun/misc stuff. I plan to travel with my gf around Asia over the next year so add on another $10000 over the next 9-12 months.
You can spend way less as a single guy living outside of Bangkok (like in Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Isaan areas, etc). Or spend a lot more if you want a bigger, more luxurious living space in the expensive parts of Bangkok.

So what's the catch with Thailand? I never understood how things can be so cheap over there. They aren't exactly a manufacturing powerhouse so they import a lot of things with their undervalued currency.
There MUST be certain things that are insanely expensive there even for an expat.
I've never been there myself, but looking at Bangkok on Street View, it doesn't seem like a dirt poor shithole like India or Africa. It actually looks nicer than Latin American cities and yet you could never live a comfortable life with that kind of budget in Latin America. It's also safer and has better infrastructure. I cannot think of any other third world country that has such an extensive metro system and a world class airport like Bangkok. Even when you check poorer areas away from central Bangkok, it looks reasonably clean, the streets are paved and well maintained etc.

I really can't understand the economics behind Thailand being so cheap. Their GDP per capita is higher than South Africa for example and there is no fucking way you could live comfortably on a $1500 budget in a major South African city.

Keep in mind the entire country is not Bangkok. But, in general, labor costs are very low and the country is big on agriculture so that leads to lower prices on food and services. The catch is that imported brand name shoes/clothes and electronics are more expensive. Prices overall are higher than when I visited for the first time in 2018 and oldheads will tell you that the 90s and early 2000s were dirt cheap compared to now.

I went to Thailand this last December/Janurary, Bangkok and Ao Nang. Amazing place.

On AirBnB for $1,500 a month you can get a spacious luxury 1 BR (sometimes 2 BR) apartment. After the earthquake it's probably less. If you want a studio you can get a great one for $1,000 a month. You can probably get for way less if you book directly with the building instead of using AirBnB I just dgaf and I enjoyed the peace of mind of using an American app.

I stayed next to the BTS line at Phrom Phong, there were 3-4 different modern malls nearby where you can get any type of food from the food court for $5-$15 per meal (depending on what you get).

And no shit an amazing quality foot/back/full body massage for 1 hour for $15... Not talking about happy ending (my wife gives me those for free) but those massages are one of the biggest things we miss about Thailand.

I also lived in Argentina, Brazil, and Bali I can talk about any of those.

picrel it's one of the shopping malls I'm talking about

People have no idea what it's like to be able to get 3 massages a week and what that does to your body. Huge quality of life benefit (in USA you're probably getting a 1hr massage for $100 in most places).

>Argentia
I went there early November 2023 and left May 2024, (also spent 1 and a half months in Brazil during Carnival).

Back then you could get a 400-450g ribeye for $12 and that was big enough to share with another person plus a side. And the quality of the meat was really incredible (still probably is). picrel

For housing you could find a good 1 BR in Palermo for $1,500-2000/mo, not as luxurious as Bangkok apartments but imo I liked BA as a city way better than Bangkok.

Fortunately or unfortunately Milei actually fixed a lot of things and now for expats it's almost as expensive as life in America, I had a buddy go there this last December and he was saying the place we used to grab steaks at for $12 is now like $22-25. Housing is probably a bit more expensive now too but then again idk I've heard he unlocked a lot of the housing supply due to de-regulations so maybe that balanced it out.

I went to Buenos Aires, Bariloche, and Mendoza. Overall really loved the country I just wish it was cheap like it used to be.

>Bali
No time in Java, I stayed in Canggu, Ubud, and Uluwatu. If you're single Bali is great because there's a lot of meetup groups for foreigners. But Bali is not really developed, super dirty and overcrowded. I liked Thailand way better than Bali, I wouldn't recommend it unless you are single or like to surf.

Also Bali belly is a real thing and I got a really bad case of it there. I think it was actually from swimming and not the food, I swam on a beach that was 200-300 meters away from a "river" runoff. (river of shit probably)

>Brazil
I went to Rio De Janeiro, Cabo Frio, Iguazu falls, and Buzios. Brazil was pretty fun but not incredibly cheap and definitely not as safe as Argentina.(1/2)

cont. (2/2)

Brazil is good for a 1-2 week vacation but it's not a place I would want to live (even for a short 1-2 month stint). The beach in Rio is fun but there's a lot of vendors bothering you every 5 mins.

It just sucks having to actually worry about your phone and money etc. I got a cheap $100 samsung phone as a burner for Brazil.

Cabo frio was boring as fuck, Iguazu falls was great (but again that's just a 2-3 day trip), and Buzios was really good (more touristy but also that means safer).

while i've only been to ubud, i found bali a bit off-kilter compare to thailand. balinese have a superficial pleasantness which belies something darker underneath. i knew about the regular internecine pogroms and felt somewhat on-guard there. admittedly, i've not seen 10% of what bali has to offer but from i saw it all felt a bit stale.
>Brazil is good for a 1-2 week vacation but it's not a place I would want to live (even for a short 1-2 month stint)
that's surprisingly intolerant. from what i've heard, adjusting for risks to personal safety, i would've thought 3-6 months would be well-tolerated. it seems to be the case the public spaces are much less enjoyable due to the "tax" and as such what passes for luxury is the absence of the "tax".

And you're 100% right the locals hate the foreigners unless they're working in the tourism industry like a hotel or restaurant.

This is actually more or less what happened in my eastern european capital a decade or so ago. I would go out with friends on Friday/Saturday night to the old town, where most of the nice bars and pubs were. Eventually, because of Tripadviser and such, all the good places were so full of tourists that it would not be possible to get in, and prices rose accordingly.
In the past five years the trend is that if people are going out, it's to local bars outside city center. Still very expensive because prices rose a lot during and after covid, but they never came down, and salaries did not rise accordingly.
Life got shittier in general.

Moving to some tropical authoritarian shithole run by brown people because you were too dumb to make enough money to retire in a real country huh. Many such cases. Calling it โ€œgeographic arbitrageโ€ is really some next level cope though. Your family and friends in the USA are still going to think of you as the degenerate uncle who probably fucks kids and definitely fucks dudes dressed as women if you move to Thailand, and they will be correct

I'm not an Amerimutt. I live in the actual best country in the world.
You would have to be retarded to move out of this country. Only exception is if you are a billionaire, then you can afford to move to the next best country in the world.
The idea of moving to the shithole that is Thailand just to enjoy what? Money pit cars, money pit brands and money pit restaurants?
Amerimutt brains are truly fried.
Nah man, I'm staying here paying my taxes and be free from chimpouts and other undesirables. Everything I need is within a 2 minute drive.

Just go to Rio. It's "expensive" but obviously not nearly as much as any first world country.
Rio's South Zone is the nearest Brazil has of a first-world place. It's also safe as fuck. Police and local government cares A LOT about South Zone safety because all the big money circulates from there.
Plus is full of foreigners there. You won't feel "alone".

Enjoy the same things you can get in other countries but cheaper.

>Money pit cars, money pit brands and money pit restaurants?
For someone who's so concerned about wasting money you should consider living in a cheap country.

>now bangkok is expensive and whores are spoiled
thailand still offers great value for money no matter if bkk, pattaya, or chiang mai. to the extent it's expensive if wholly dependent on one's appetite. provided you're not clubbing 2-3X a week and whoring as often, then it's clearly a fantastic deal and will end up costing less than $1k/month.

>whores are spoiled
i always said the whores were just the cherry on top. europe's a better deal wrt to whores but doesn't have thailand's rizz.

I actually somewhat agree with this. SEA/South America should only be a temporary living situation while you focus on your sigma grindset and make enough money to live a life of luxury back in America/Europe. 1-2 years max and then by then you should have your own remote business.

But yeah for a 1-2 year stint where you're cutting down costs and building something this is a great lifestyle, not to mention fun and adventurous.

No you do t get it. A self described millionaire needs a monthly expenses of only 1k vs 4k in the first world. Do you really think a millionaire can afford to spend 40$ on a ribeye instead of 12$?

If you're a millionaire (like $1-3 mil) you still aren't making that much money.

If you invest that $1-3mil in the S&P500 you're probably making ~10% a year on average which is $100k-300k, half of that you need to save to compound so you're taking home $50k-150k, it's the same as having a decent job...

If you have $10 million or more then yeah you can actually afford a luxury lifestyle anywhere just based off of the investment income.

most people are insects
they would rather stay near their crowded hometown and endlessly bitch about rent or even risk homelessness rather than move to a less crowded area and instantly improve their material conditions
and if you tell them so, they will invoke business opportunities, as if most of them aren't near minimum wage anyways

I think it makes sense, but I wouldn't want to raise a family in a third world country. What is better, I think, is if you can make a high income remotely and live in the countryside with good infrastructure, clean air, fewer undesirables and lower cost of living than the big city.

I'm working on it too. There are plenty of affordable options in Ipanema, Leblon, and Lagoa. Safe, restaurants, bars, women, beach, etc etc. I'm hoping to cash in after the bull run, then wait for Brazil's currency devaluation or real estate market stagnation to make the money go further.
