Lmao, the government taxes silver and gold at a punitive rate since they are considered collectibles like beanie babies, so high you are guaranteed to lose if you hold long term.

>Pre-1965 silver coinage, which contains 90% silver and 10% copper, is subject to specific tax regulations. The IRS considers physical holdings in precious metals, including pre-1965 silver coins, as collectibles. When these coins are sold, the gains are subject to capital gains tax, which is up to 37% and state tax up to 13%. This tax rate applies to the sale of precious metals, regardless of whether they are in the form of bullion coins, bullion bars, rare coinage, or ingots. The tax rate depends on your marginal tax rate. Even worse your "gain" is likely due to inflation so it's not even real but you still get taxed!

>Gold and Silver bullion minted by a goverment institution, which have a denomination, are legal tender
Maybe, but that doesn't mean you can use them to make payments. I can think of only one case where the face value was more than the metal content's worth: a brief time when silver dropped rendering the kilo Queen's Beast completer coin's face value greater. Story is, a guy tried to cash it at a bank and it was refused. I can't find that story online though.
More here, for bongs:
https://www.royalmint.com/aboutus/policies-and-guidelines/legal-tender-guidelines
Mostly, bullion coins are minted under a government's authority/license so the mint can sell them and avoid certain taxes by virtue of being legal tender in some countries.

Yes, It's the metal value that counts. The denominations are usually way lower than the price of the metal.
I think it's more about creating a loophole giving 0% tax on gold and silver, in certain places, like my country.
The state clearly doesn't mind because they haven't done anything about it.

Any metal that has a face value and denomination is completely tax exempt.

That's unfortunate, a lot of the communist era stuff is so bland in comparison to the designs that came out before the war.
>A lot of them were made in England anyways.
It's always so interesting to me how countries used to contract out their minting work to other countries' mints and yet nowadays the only big examples of this happening are Sweden whose coins are minted by Finland after they shut down their own mint and New Zealand who never had a mint and have their coins made by the Royal Canadian Mint.

The best use of gold and silver as legs tender is on moving money from country to country. You can bring 50$ gold pieces in and out of the USA and you only need to declare their face value, not their melt value.

There are only three major scenarios in which you should sell:
>It's an emergency and you urgently need money
You aren't going to get the metal's full value if you are trying to sell as quickly as possible and you need to accept that.
>You need money for a major investment/ purchase
Talk to a dealer in person beforehand, get an appraisal and shop around a lot, look everywhere and see who gives you the best price. You aren't really in a rush to sell in this scenario, so take your time to find the best price.
>PMs have found their true value
Selling is not necessary, if Gold and Silver have truly found their true value (that is to say fiat is dead) you should be able to just spend the metal itself in such a scenario.
If Gold and Silver have somehow mooned without fiat collapsing, then you'll probably want to shop around for the best deal like I said in the option above.

we'll assume whatever government got instated to tell people via the shiny box that yes, we're now trading in slibber, come exchange your paper, will probably mint their own coins to establish dominance and have recognizable coins.
In that case, sell any trash metal (<90% purity) you have to the state or melt it IF their rates are acceptable. To find out if it is, simply see what one ounce buys you afterwards.

>Who cares about making money
This is the one thing fiat monkeys and crypto dorks don't understand. They don't deal in money, they deal in currency and the hypothetical value of it. And the bigger their numbers, the more inflation is apparent at exchanges and crypto off ramps. That translates to siphoning fiat off of the desperate and foolish into the hands of those at the top.
Those at the top know it can't go on forever. Their (inflation) tax cattle won't be able to afford to live anymore and will revolt. That's why crypto was created in the first place. To give false hope of making it when in reality it's no different than stocks, just at a more rapid pace. For every person who made it in crypto there's thousands or more who lost. Getting more eyes on crypto and less on tangible assets was their goal, and it worked for most people. But, you can fool all of the people some of the time, but you can't fool some of the people all of the time. That's why we're feared. We skip the line of rehypothecation of fiat currency and go straight to the source for real money: gold and silver.
When most of the people realize this its game over for the ones at the top, and we win. Real buying power back in the hands of the public.

My understanding is there wasn't much demand or use of the half dollar. Most Canadians preferred to use quarters or dollars and typically the half dollar was the least minted coin of the denominations.

>>60625333
Your question would only relate to Dimes and quarters and unlike coins from the states you can't just look at the rim to see if there are two different colors. A sandwich of materials. We blended the metals so it still looks silver colored. Other than a scanner you could do a ping test or weigh them. I've also been told there's a formula for gravity tests.

Each share of SLV represents a fraction of an ounce of silverโ€”not a full ounce. Last time I looked into it it was 1 share of SLV equals .90 Oz of silver. It was never meant to be a mirror.

If you want to have it mirror spot price you'd have to buy physical :)

That's the big thing with crypto. These dorks are all "I have 1 bitcoin. 1 bitcoin = 1 bitcoin" and it's just a claim to USD. If it goes to zero, it might as well be an excel file with a password on it that needs a GPU to unlock.
Meanwhile if the value of silver drops, I can at least take it to a jeweler and have them make something out of it and give to a special lady.
Crypto has ruined relationships. The only relationships PMs ruined is when the didn't have enough.

Hi, newbie stacker here.

What is the logic behind the idea that silver should be worth 13+ grand per oz? I know that the performance of the paper asset keeps the physical one down, but surely not 400x less than it should be?

Also, people here regularly mention the fact that global silver demand is greater than current added supply. But what exactly counts as "demand"? If we have the same ounce of silver traded between 10 different parties, wouldn't that add 10 oz to the stat even though there's only one ounce moving around? The argument is made as if silver, when used or purchased, is permanently consumed, not to mention that derivatives trading itself also accounts into this stat. Wouldn't it be better to exklusively look at the yearly industrial demand to get an idea for how much of an actual deficit -- if any, exists?

And what about RECYCLED silver? The stuff that is gained from products no longer in service, or collected as a biproduct of another chemical process? Roughly 800 million oz was mined in 2024, and apparently that doesn't include the 200 million or so oz recovered from recycling?

In short, I fear that the referenced demand is inflated, and that existing silver supplies are underestimated.

Nice. I did put in a Bluetooth adapter for the convenience for music in mine. But these newer cars all have shitty head units where the UI is garbage and annoying.
When I have to get a "new" vehicle I'm going to break the warranty and flash in some custom stuff. Not exactly looking forward to dealing with that.

Bullshit. almost 200 million ounces was recovered from recycling in 2024. Global demand that same year was ~1.2 billion oz. Being able to recover one sixth of your yearly demand (and just under a third of the industrial demand) is no joke.

The numbers for supply include both supply and recycling.
The demand we look at is industrial demand from business reports, i.e. what buisnesses claim to buy and use for their own production, not the stock demand, or some coin merchants sell and buy list.

With the current deficit the reserves will be bone dry in 10 years.

Which from what I could find online is at round 600 million ounces. Of which I presume almost all of it is newly mined or collected from recycling, and not existing metal trading hands between several entities.

>>60627632
>500 million annual glu
Maybe not that much. Take the 203 million ounces "Jewelry" entry in your picrel as an example. A lot of that demand could be in the form of newly made, overpriced stuff, and NOT older stuff. "Silverware" I imagine is overwhelmingly just existing metal trading hands. Perhaps a total annual glut of 400 million?

Either way, it would explain why silver hasn't increased in price for decades -- and actually LOST value when accounting for inflation -- whatever price appreciation silver would have had in an optimal supply-and-demand environment is eradicated by a continuous surplus.

Yet people want to sit here and pretend that a 1oz coin trading hands 1000 times means a net demand of 1000oz and therefor a need to mine 1000oz from the ground...

To be precise, I will assume your claim about silver "glut" means silver staying out of circulation.

>Jewelry and Silverware
Jewlery and Silverware gets remelted and recycled in a constant cycle.
It does not stop circulating after it has been put into jewlery, in fact it usually has a lifetime.
I assume a big part of the recycled number is specifically from jewlery and silverware.
Either that or it gets remelted into a bar and enters a reserve somewhere.
The only silver that normally does not get remelted, and therefore does not enter circulation are collectors items.

>Net Coin & Bar Demand and Net Hedging Demand
Again, after a bullion coin has been in circulation for some time it will be recycled and remelted into a new coin.
Numiastic coins enter the collectors market, and will not re-enter the silver market unless the value of silver exceeds the numiastic value of the coin.

The deficit will slowly drain from reserves, and unless the silver price rises people buying physical coins and bars will not sell. -> the reserves drain, as they have been doing for years.

The reserves have shrunk by 15% the last 3 years, so clearly more silver is being used, and less silver coins and bars are in circulation

>assume annual mining rate of 800 million troy ounces
>18325500000 / 800,000,000 = ~22.9 years

So 23 years until we run out of our existing reserves. Assuming we don't find any more deposits. Maybe we'll find a bit more to add seven or so years to this?

>"The deficit will slowly drain from reserves"
But that would only happen at worst in ~23 years, no? Question is what price action would look like in the years leading up to that. I'm not sure I want to wait two decades years before seeing any major appreciation.

I wasn't referring to those reserves, but that's something else that could impact the price.

The ones I were referring to were COMEX and LBMA vaults containing already melted silver.
LBMA is now down to 750M oz.
COMEX went got down to 200Moz before LBMA helped them out by transferring some silver over to them

The glut is what industry is not using, highlighted in yellow, its been fairly constant at 500 million ounces per year. All silver mined gets sold thats why its silly to say silver sold in ingots is a defeceit. That means the total surplus of silver(tens of billions of ounces) is growing. If the price of silver goes up, more will get mined, industry will use less, more will get recycled by industry and people dumping grannies silverwear and jewelry. Price increases are self correcting you can see that in silver or any other commodity

That's where your assumption is wrong.
Silver and jewlery gets remelted into bars, bullion coins get remelted.
These enter reserves, and reserves sell to industry.

The whole equation is a deficit.

Reserves could mean what's in the ground, those numbers constantly increase, I.e. oil was expected to run out 25 years ago and now reserves are much much higher

Or what's in warehouses, stackers closets or jewelry boxes,,,,,,,,that's tens of billions of ounces

Except they're not. Your whole argument is that there is some magical surpluss somewhere.
I've already mentioned how jewlery, silverware, coins and bars are in constant circulation.
This circulation flow enters COMEX and LBMA, yet these are also decreasing, just as we would expect with a deficit.

So then tell me where is this magical mountain of silver you claim exists somewhere?

You are again missing the point. So I will ask chatGPT to explain it to you like your 5 for me.
Here you go:

Imagine you have a bathtub. This bathtub is full of silver bars, and we all look at it to see how much water (silver) is left when demand goes up.

That bathtub is COMEX and LBMA โ€” it's not all the silver in the world, but it's the bathtub that big players actually draw from to settle trades, make deliveries, and move large amounts of silver around.

Now imagine more water is leaving the bathtub than is coming in.

Even if there are other puddles of water in peopleโ€™s houses (jewelry, coins, old forks in drawers), those arenโ€™t helpful unless the water actually flows into the bathtub again. But guess what? The bathtub is still draining.

Youโ€™re saying, โ€œThereโ€™s water in the world, donโ€™t worry.โ€
But Iโ€™m saying, โ€œYes โ€” but the main supply of ready-to-use water is getting lower, and thatโ€™s what matters for price and shortages.โ€

The fact that COMEX and LBMA did drop a lot (and are still way below 2021) proves that the system is running short. It doesnโ€™t matter if grandma has silver spoons somewhere โ€” theyโ€™re not helping unless she melts them down and puts them back into the trading system.

I see what you mean now. And looking at LBMA, silver holdings did indeed fall drastically, and have barely recovered. It's starting to increase a little, though, so maybe they'll be able to pull off increasing inventory before shit hits the fan?

Comex have done it. Silver inventory spiked recently, so based on that I'd like to think the same can be done for the LBMA vaults.
https://datatrack.trendforce.com/Chart/content/1545/comex-inventory-silver

But if not, and mining operations cannot fulfill demand quick enough (even if sufficient mining reserves exist)... then yeah shit's fucked.

I'm gonna head off for tonight. Thank you for taking the time to discuss this. Will personally continue to stack (albeit very moderately).

Yes, it all depends on whether industrial demand increases the next years or not.
Right now it's a very delicate balance.
I believe it will since silver is the best conducting metal on earth, and production will continue being stagnant (since silver is mostly a byproduct of copper mining).

For Bullion (and the sorts of coins you'd be buying for the same prices as Bullion) tarnish won't effect the value.
If you really want to prevent tarnishing, store your Silver in sealed tubes/capsules, avoid putting your safe in places where there'd be lots of sulfur compounds in the air (like the kitchen or garage) and put some antitarnish strips in your safe to slow the process.
>>60628562
Coins are usually better since they have more anti-counterfeit features than bars and get favorable treatment from the tax codes in certain regions.
Bars are a bit cheaper than coins and come in larger sizes, so there's also that to consider.
