Imagine life is a RPG with your player level from 1 to 100. In a typical MMORPG as you progress up the levels you accumulate more and more gear (gold etc) and it becomes easier for you to get more and more gear as your gear score increases. America works in a similar way. Even if you work a paltry retail job your entire life like flipping burgers for $20 for 40 years straight starting at age 18 at 40 hours a week you would have earned at least $1,664,000 before taxes. After the 40 years, you're now considered to be a max level player in terms of the story line quest (Standard Wage Slave) and you beat the game (Retirement). You're now at the end game where you can do whatever you want with your loot (money you saved over 40 years) on top of the game giving you a reward bonus every month for finishing the storyline (monthly login quest aka Social Security). This monthly login quest gives you around 2-4k a month.
Now you understand why old people have so much cash laying around even if they do the bare minimum.
