>>60649550>But that veneer *can* overcome the savagery. It doesn't overcome it, the mental gymnastics (i.e religion in your Christian king example) simply temporarily override it to allow people to do performative "good deeds". It goes against our nature and is obviously doomed to forever be a facade that has to be constantly maintained either outwards or inwards or both for the facade to not slip or seep into the conscious mind.
Civilization has absolutely never "won out" beyond the hyper specific example you mentioned, because for every one such instance, billions have died in the background, in poverty, to savagery and indifference, in droves and mass graves, unknown to the pages of history. This continues today even with the advent of technology. 109 billion people have died since the beginning of time, 95% unknown and unremembered by anyone. We tell ourselves we cant save em all, but that's just cope in its purest form. It is our nature to step on the heads of our species to ultimately derive meaning out of life. But there is no such meaning, and never will be. The only thing that is real, is your survival instinct and your greed to it and by extension, the best way to satisfy that survival - money.
