The pumps and dumps are just oscillations either side of that, brought about by market irrationality. People crowd into Bitcoin in search of short-term profits which drives the price up above the ‘fair’ value until a point where it becomes unsustainable and overcorrects back down, but over the course of time the price averages out to track that line. The fluctuations are reducing in scale over time as well, like ripples in a pond after you throw a stone in, and eventually they’ll diminish to nothing.
