Can someone explain the US-Japan trade deal? How or why would the US collect 90% profits from a 550 billion Japanese investment?

My shallow understanding is that Japan caved and is letting the US sell rice to them.

I could be wrong.
How or why the us is going to collect most of the margin from trade?

I don't think it's an 'investment', it's a 'trade deal' that involves other japan/american products with the tariffs.
Also, i don't think the profits go directly to the government unless you're accounting for farm subsidies?

Idk how you're correlating an investment with a deal. They're not equivalent.

because there wont be any profit since it will be operated by the government. they wont fail either because they can prop them up with tax.

It's a nothingburger. A little increase in some tariffs vs a little decrease in other tariffs. Some people will win and some will lose. I expect the net outcome to be around zero.
The "550 billion investment" is just posturing, it's not legally binding and I expect Japan will just continue doing what it already does, which is invest in the US when it makes sense for them to do so, but allow Trump to take the credit when and if that happens.

550 bil is most likely investment into Alaska lng pipeline + relevant infrastructure. US has been trying to rope Korea and japan into this project for a while. The 90%, if true, most likely means that japan will only get a small fraction of the resulting lng.
Meanwhile, Korea is more likely to get better deals because the shipbuilding bargaining chip is too juicy for the US to pass up.

I think that's the estimated future purchase for the deal. Again, i could be wrong. It could be that Japan bought a contract worth 550B.
It's not uncommon for the US to package state deals the same way.
Idk anything about the specified details.
Just that it's a big deal that Japan is going to buy rice. This could be because they have china buying rice from Japan and their rice prices have been going up.

I'm open to correction tho
