you need several million now to get what just one million used to get you
after accounting for inflation, including the inflation they don't tell you about (price of housing, etc.), I'd say you need $5,000,000 to live an equivalent lifestyle as a bottom barrel millionaire in the 2000s

When Boomers talked about being a millionaire it was worth 4x what it is today

I am doing a reno on a 20m beachside penthouse rn. A realtor brought some people to look at it, some flavor of Europe couple, funny accents, late in life, with an Indian woman who i assume was their assistant. Now I've done quite a bit of these luxury properties at this point and im serious when I say this was one of if not the best veiw ive ever seen. The couple was escorted up to the window, immediately scoffed and asked to be taken to a different property.

Basically, 1m dollars is fucking nothing

If you arenโ€™t interested in luxury properties or cars, $1 mil is plenty. Boomers seem to think $1 mil is the minimum you need to buy their lifestyle, but a condo and passive income could be had easily to make life easier for a single

People think the penthouse is about looking down on the poors, all the little ants scurrying around, but not really. Its about looking down on all the other penthouses in slightly shorter buildings

I guess thatโ€™s why I have always been able to save a lot no matter what my income. I never got much enjoyment over luxury items. And youโ€™re right, people that are hooked on them are always looking to the next thing that is just out of reach, and they will be working all their lives to get it

Correct. Living on $1M in assets gets your enough to pay property taxes on a shitty house, a mediocre car every 7-10 years, a weekly trip to Longhorn steakhouse and a twice a year plane ticket to see your grandkids.

$5M gets you a decent house, a decent car, ability to fly (coach) and travel to basic 4/5 star destinations and eat at good restaurants, with regular maid cleanings.

It really isn't to live on forever. You get $20k-$50k a year on a mil. That's liveable in like a "I sit at home and play vidya and go to the gym" lifestyle. I spend more than that a year on restaurants and whole foods.

It's definitely not nothing, but it's also not a lot. People can't look at it like "the end goal" at this point.

I have a little over 1M NW and I could physically not retire now. I'd need at least 3-4M to cover expenses, healthcare, emergencies, etc. And even then, you're not living a super high-class lifestyle with that.

I have 6 figs, but I still feel like I don't have shit, and that all my years here were a waste of time
Even though I have things giving me some profits like npc while I'm at work, I still feel like I'm wasting time
