i recently started my first engineering job, and im pretty sure im being treated differently because of my gender. its 95%+ men and im being given the most communication-heavy tasks instead of harder design work. the engineers also treat each other differently when im around like theyre trying to outwit each other, its exhausting

I know i supposedly have some privilege being one of the few females but it hasnt been easy so far. any career advice for a female in tech?

I think a combination of being female and being green/young are factors that are against you. Unfortunately for you, you'll probably have to trudge through this shit as a newbie before they give you the harder design work. It's part of being the low man on the totem pole. Most of us go through this early in our careers

Why do you care about your career? Genuine question. You could easily just coast on being given easy assignments for your life based on the supposed need to have females in generally male fields.

With this extra time and energy not spent doing hard tasks you could find a husband and have children and spend plenty of time caring for them.

What is wrong with this scenario? Why is demanding the top level assignments and policing men to pretend there’s not a woman around so important to you?

kek

you haven't learned that all engineers are gay yet, have you?

I worked for Jacobs for a few years. Met hundreds of engis. I never met anyone that would find a woman attractive

Engineer here, nobody's treating you differently because you're a foid. They're treating you differently because you're a grad. You have no idea what engineering actually involves yet, because you're mistakenly expecting it to be similar to what you spent the last 4 years doing in uni.
Treat the first few years of your work experience like an apprenticeship. You can also read books like "The Making of an Expert Engineer" to help figure it out faster.

Also, design is complete dogshit and you should avoid it. Every grad on the planet thinks they want to get into design, and it's fun at first. But then you realise that after you've designed one widget, it's exactly the same as designing the next 10,000.

This is just how men are and you aren't used to it. Men are constantly competing with one another and some of the most autistic/annoying ones (very common in engineering) do it in very petty ways. Welcome to the party

It's very real, probably more real in my domain (software engineering) since the men are more feminine, but men in general are absolutely flexing on each other. Women treat work like daycare crafts, any competition they do is purely social.

Zoomer here, finding a job as an engineer is hell, since almost all companies I've applied to have gender quotas. I already have a job but the situation looks dire.
