I was trying to think of a coupon to attach to one of my fliers that I'll be sending out soon.
Normally I charge service call rates (mileage + time), and I have been getting a lot more business in this resort-type area, and the work there makes me way more money than the normal crappy stuff.

They're about a half hour away and I don't think they're calling because every call I get from that area, they always ask how much it is for me to go out there since it's so far away.

I figure the business I would get from a free trip charge type of coupon in that area would offset the travel costs, plus i get a word-of-mouth bonus.

I just can't figure out what to put on the coupon or how to word it. Are there any marketing people around who could brainstorm with me to say something like:

-free mileage
-free labor charge for travel

in a like, "SAVE 100%" type of way?

I'll even include this template here, mostly for the laughs to see what you'll write in it, but also don't hold back on the ideas.

Put a sign for free foreskins at the back of an industrial lumber microwave or a large walk-in oven

That is a bad idea, anon. You are trying to make coupons for customers who have to pay for your travel.

>clearly, this is not a business cost to you when they are far away.

If you are discussing word of mouth to draw more business. They are far away from you and are out of network, basically.

You need to set a separate rate for people far away. If you are able to travel. Set a separate rate for those people until you can support it properly.

What you can do is put the fliers out of network with the pull tab with the new price and claim that there is no travel fee. However, raise the price of the service.

The coupon isn't tackling the real problem, and while it might be helpful to get the word out, you need to address why your potential customers would be reluctant to call you. You want to remove that obstacle where they first encounter it.
Where exactly do they get the impression that it's too far out there? Are they on your website/prices where you say you charge based on distance? If that's the case, you would be better off just putting a "no trip charge for X area", or better yet "no trip charge above $X spent". Definitely put a "we service X area!" on it.

The cost of the travel will offset the cost of not getting a call to begin with.

that literally is the obstacle. i've talked to people about this, and have been in the industry long enough to know. even at my last job it was the same thing. i'm hoping to kind of get above the curve in that manner. there's plenty of ways to make money that doesn't cause customer apprehension.

although i appreciate your advice, i'm more or less looking for some good way to articulate a free trip charge without causing confusion

I browsed over your comment again after not paying enough attention the first time, and here is my second reply:

I am more or less tossing a stone in the water here, to be creative with this before I execute it.

I have several competitors in my area and they seem to all be stuck in the same rut. Now that my kids are grown up and moved out, I'm thinking about making my company a hobby instead of just something to pay the bills and my vacation fund.
