The cost of the building itself is usuallly only a tiny fraction of a million dollars house, it’s mostly the land so living like some hick in shipping containers does nothing

After 3 winters your "house" will have a 5-10 degree tilt from freeze-thaw.

Every spring you'll be breaking out the bottle jacks and shimming.

But still would prefer this to living in a shitty.

that shit will cave right in on them unless they framed entirely new supports all over, in which case, what was the point of the shipping containers besides being some thin cheap ass metal skin with zero insulation?

I have a hard time believing this, I'm sure if they had a teardown house, or leveled the building and sold just the land it would probably go for more than 1.6M.
Just looking at land prices, anything over an acre is minimum $4.5M, up to $49M in that area.
Shit like this

Property assessments done by counties are renowned to being inaccurate. In my area they still assess homes at 50% of their value, you'll see the entire property is assessed at 300k and it will be selling for 700k, so it doesn't actually speak to the value of anything.

Grew up in a house built on piers. It's not really a big deal. Takes only 30 mins or so, if the wife is inside with a bubble level and the knowledge of how to read it.

When I've seen houses on piers, the piers sit on concrete piers that a drilled down to frost depth.

Yes. They look a bit different than the ones in OP's pic, but essentially the same thing. It probably helped that we had a porch all the way around, and drainage ditches to funnel running water around the perimeter - that probably helped reduce the amount of ground movement. Also we had skirting around the outside to prevent wind from blowing underneath the house and playing hell with heating/cooling.

Depends on the state, not the county. CA property taxes are reassessed when the property is sold or changes are made to the property. That doesn't mean that land value/improvement value is incorrect because it is not up to date.

Property values in LA are still going to very significantly based on their location. Obviously land with better views or more desirable areas are going to go for more, like ocean front property in Malibu or wherever.

I think its actually pretty easy to figure out whether doing something like this is worth it. Why are prices in places with extremely high prices so high? Not because the buildings are somehow superior, thats obvious, its because its on land that everyone wants to be on.

So you either get to live dirt cheap in a shipping container in the middle of bumfuck nowhere, or your living a shipping container for 800k in NY.
Sounds retarded

yes- Ive dealt with these. Insulation is one of the main issues- fiberglass takes too much space. Spray foam too tight and traps water vapor. These are mold canisters. Waste of time for internet cool points. Just build a wood-framed structure and put metal on the outside for the look of it means that much to you.

Youre wrong. One container alone that is W&WT is $3k. Then shipping, then manipulation on site. $10k just to get two where you want them, just sitt8ng on ground, no foundation. Then need basic septic and water- theres your 30k.

This is like hempcrete, adobe houses, earthships and every other fad. If they were so great, why aren't they everywhere? Seems like living in metal boxes used to carry TEMU garbage from China is less than ideal.

Here is a novel idea. Why not just build the shit yourself from H blocks and rebar? It is essentially what normal houses are made from. Economies of scale means that it will always be cheaper.
