my father works as a software development manager for a bit less than 50k a year, im confident if he tried to get a better job in a foreign firm he could do remote work and make 100k+ for sure

Im greedy and want to live even more comfortly. I want to hear comments on this

I myself am finishing 2nd year of petroleum engineering college

Does anyone have experinece in this field

also my fathers credentials

It's not 2023 anymore OP, your dad will be jobless, de facto unskilled by the time you have finished your engineering degree and begin to start your own unemployment.

Sounds like the kind of "software manager" that fell upwarda after doing boomer it work for 20 years and think the few automation scripts he wrote are relevant experience.
Comp sounds in line at this point

Those days are gone. Software engineers are just another species of engineer and get paid accordingly. Unless youre a talented outlier youre getting 80-120k tops
HCOL areas like california inflate the salaries but they all spend 3000+ for rent for 7k+ for their mortgage so theyre fucked too

I would say for non-juniors the band is more like $90-160k. Then if you're a top dog you can command over $200k. But there is sort of a binary situation similar to other fields like law, most cluster in that $90-160k range, then there's a power gap and you get the "elites" who skew SWE average salaries with their West Coast shit.

What does it even mean SQL and JAVA are the lowest level jobs. It's like saying logic is low level.

Let me translate that from Calvinism: The supply/demand is highest for these jobs.
