When I was in my teens we would get paid by a ticket scalper to stand in line outside ticketmaster all night. We figured out we could just leave then go party all night and come back in the morning. We got paid, he got shit tickets. Good times.

My 30 year old brother invests in Pokémon cards.
He tracks the value of all the boxes he owns through an app.
He’s invested probably 10k but the app has the value of his Pokémon portfolio at like 17k now.
I’m honestly hoping it’s a bubble, not to spite him, but the whole thing just seems really stupid to me.
There’s so many people doing it now, it just rubs me the wrong way.

It's going to be fun watching him try to realize "app" prices on the open market. It's all fun and games until you actually try to sell. I'm sure there are pieces he has that will go for more than he paid, but I've had a lot of experience with price guides and grey sheets vs. real world prices realized. Just because dealers are getting a certain price for comparables, that in no way means you can convert for the same amount. He'll probably start off trying to price directly off the app when he sells, then will have to capitulate at some point and bundle cards, and be more realistic with what he can get.

This is kind of different because these are people opening brand new boxes hoping to find the rarest card in the best condition (ie. rated 10/10 from one of the grading companies, i think its called psa). 90% of those boxes they buy aren't even going to make a profit but as long as they hit on 1 card and it's printed perfectly they make everything back plus more. I have a percentage in collectibles, but I just buy and hold for a while instead of trying to flip them. People who just buy all of the entire stock of a new release and then turn around and scalp it on ebay for a markup are the worst. I mostly buy old comics.
