Everyone and their dogs are putting out books nowadays. Getting readers' attention is the impossible part. You have to market the absolute shit out of yourself, unless you want to write the goyslop drivel that the NYC publishing houses gobble up and regurgitate and market for you.
The NYC publishing houses today are wholly "woke" female-oriented enterprises that force messages of LGBTQP+ "inclusion" into every novel. Don't believe me? Walter Jon Williams is a (lefty) author who didn't shovel troonshit into every book, until suddenly he did. His most recent trilogy (starting with "The Accidental War") suddenly trooned out one of the very minor characters from his previous trilogy ("The Praxis") and has made him/her/it much more visible in the second trilogy.
Or look at Martha Wells' "Murderbot" series, full of group marriages and "polyamory".
Or look at Becky Chambers' "Wanderers" series, where in the first book one character has two dads, other characters engage in sexual relationships with practically everyone (including a female-ish alien lizard), and trying to preserve your race and culture is presented as some sort of violent fascist concept.
Or look at damn near anything else that has been published through a NYC publishing house in the last 10-15 years. Gay romances, anti-"fascist" drivel, and so on.
Marketing your own books is hard; there's such an enormous glut of complete garbage that it's hard to break out. Selling a few dozen copies isn't going to pay your rent.
A "midlist" self-published author I read regularly, who is actually somewhat popular and has gotten a few awards nominations, just declared bankruptcy and moved out of the country. He's living in a Latin American shithole and trying to stay afloat. At one point he was working as an Amazon warehouse wagie to try to stave off bankruptcy but after an accident he couldn't keep doing that.
