German immigrants were one of the groups with the biggest numbers to immigrate to America
So why is it so hard to find German food in the US? I cant walk down my street without tripping over a pizza place, a taco place, and some random asian place. But for German I have to drive an hour and a half one way just to find a restaurant that specializes in German food.

Yeah, OP, I get it. NYC here and our historically German neighborhood (Yorkville) has only a few German remnants left: the Schaller & Weber deli, the Heidelberg restaurant, etc. S&W is still the best place in Manhattan to go for German groceries although they're not cheap of course.

And even then, certain things like the butterbrezel you can't find here, you'd have to make it yourself.

That's not quite accurate. There were so many Germans that many towns were almost exclusively populated by Germans and they had German newspapers, German speaking schools etc. Anti-German sentiment from WW1 dramatically accelerated the assimilation process.

The short answer is that the German Americans, the largest minority in America at the time, were culturally genocided by the anglos during ww1. German Americans were put in camps, forbidden from speaking their language and practicing their customs, and forced to change their names. Prior to 1914, in every major American city there'd be a German minority community where you'd easily find German restaurants and groceries, and if this were the Midwest, the majority population would be German and you'd definitely speak German yourself even if you weren't, having picked it up from your friends during school/your parents forced you to go to a German school so you could help translate for your dad's business.

This is what happens when anglos encounter other European cultures; their first instinct is to destroy them. This happens all the time, in America, South Africa, Canada I mean the list goes on: anglos will speak to dominate then destroy other European cultures and populations. That is their way.

I'd love a traditional German joint, lederhosen and all too, but you need to understand just how much a lot of our food is already pretty damn German in origin. Let's forget the theme for now, and just consider menu items, yeah? There really isn't that much that would stand out, and upon those things that do, the FDA has a heavy hand over due to our meat processing not being anywhere near as good as in Europe.
German food can, for the most part, be boiled down to just sausages, potatoes, cabbage, mustard and beer. For the fishy stuff I'm used to from the north, you'd have to live in a coastal state for, and I can guarantee you can get your fish sandwiches easy. I like mine with red onion and pickled peppers.
Anyway, what I'm trying to get at is, back in the day, Krauts had such a strong culture over here that over the years really just kinda mixed in, that you're probably eating Krautchow without even realizing it. The brown people just lump it in under the generic label of "white people food"

This thread makes me curious, have you Americans ever ate pic related? Pork knuckles with potato salad. It's my favorite food here and I could never live without it anymore. It's like the roasted chicken but 100 times better with a very crunchy delicious skin. If you drink a beer before and have that slight tipsy vibe, it tastes even better. Reminds me that tomorrow is saturday and I'm probably going there for lunch again, good my wife is driving.

I think German food is to the core very basic and more about the meat itself. Less spices, less work, just show it's main ingredient form the best side. Maybe? not sure. But that would explain why it's not so popular, because it's not as flashy as your nice burito full of flavors and colors.

similar enough that English speakers used to not make a distinction. the word 'Dutch' exists as a corruption of the German word for German people; 'Deutsch'. Germans don't call themselves German, 'Germany' is simply a historic region within the former Prussian Empire.

He was referring to the fact that the guy is from the Quad-Cities, where this mustard is made and where Harris Pizza and Happy Joe's also exist. We're well aware that it's Dutch, fool.

... that said, that mustard goes quite well with a lot of German sausages. We used to have it with bratwurst all the time back in Iowa.

in Ottawa there's like nothing, but I found some frozen ones with no added sugar and syrup. $7.50 for 4. Is that a good deal? I ate them all today... 1600 calories. I haven't had meat in 4 weeks

Goddamn, for whatever reason, this particular topic really brings out the argumentative retards. What's your deal? Think it would be bad to talk about German food like its tasty or something? Interestingly, the same exact type of bullshit pops up whenever a thread is created, that discusses eating pork. Huh. Wonder why that is?
