I basically turned them from dull to unusable dull. I couldn't even cut through the skin of a tomato afterwards.
HOWEVER
I realized I had nothing to lose and I went back and tried again. It took me about an hour, but I managed to not only get the blades sharp again, but they're definitely sharper than they were when I first tried. So the plate method does in fact work if you have nothing else to use.
