One thing is to show the character going through hardships, and the other is just bashing the character on and on, and belittling him in the process. When you like a character, you usually want people to sympathize with him, and just look at the general audience's opinions on Mike.

So the problem with that is how Taeshi very clearly keeps trying to show Mike as a character you are expected to sympathize with, in-story. She's even spelled it out with Daisy at the library. Compare this to how Mike was portrayed back during the half-decade of sperg gremlinhood, with nary a redeeming quality. Now that's not to say that Taeshi hasn't stupidly undermined her own message at every turn, but that's why the paradox exists.

A couple of observations:
1. Taeshi has not demonstrated much intelligence in her storytelling thus far. I think we can all agree there are a multitude of obvious problems she seems oblivious to. Half of BCB's ironic appeal is in how Taeshi finds new ways to fuck up the narrative. Easy case in point: Paisy. What a fucking awful ship, on so many levels. Yet look at how Taeshi keeps treating it like this beautiful example of two predestined lovers finally realizing who their true soulmate is.

2. Her core audience has proven, time and time again, that it will happily gulp down whatever horseshit-laden swill Taeshi pours down the slop chute. This has reassured her that consistency does not matter and, thus, any passing fancy (ex. Mike slamming Paulo's head into the table) can be indulged without fear of ruining the story. This is wrong and dumb but very appealing.

It's very weird writing. If there's a central theme to the comic (at least in the back half) it's that not communicating with people you care about is catastrophic for you and them, so it's kind of fucked up that the resolution appears to be shaping up to be "just double down on bottling up everything until your pain becomes so impossible to conceal that someone finally notices and rushes to your aid, despairing that they neglected the severity of your suffering". All the more reason I view Mike as a hurt/comfort avatar and not an authorial punching bag.

To be fair, while I do not condone such behavior I can understand it. Revealing how much you are in pain or suffering an cascade and lead others to be harmed or feeling like they failed you in some way or if said other person is already having issues it might feel wrong to put more on them. Paulo has had a couple of issues and part he does have and clakc a male role model so he acted like a fuckboi for a while. His dad from what we have seen is a good guy but he is a single father trying to care for someone while working to keep everything they have.

Abbey & Molly on their won could be a decent spin off comic especially due to the pain their biological father has inflicted on them and the trauma his shadow cause to ABbey to the point he was worried he would be just like him.

Mike is the golden boy of the family and his parents are in a very rough relationship and from what we have seen, that is his only or most experience with relationships. Lucy's dad is away, and they don't really hang out with Daisy's family much at all. While not a great explanation, it explains why he took Sandy back or why he has been the supportive stay-at-home housewife in this "relationship" and kinda with Lucy when he was her teddy bear.

To be fair, II was thinking less of Mike willing trying to kill himself and more like he tried to cross some water while not well, like he was attempting to do some soul searching or having dark thoughts of suicide or isolation, and it happened by accident. Naturally, Mike would not be trying to kill himself here, but the "attempt" would give him some perspective. Plus, no one is around to make it about Lucy.

Well my thinking is this: way back in vol. 3, Lucy was mad that Mike Sandy over her, which led to their friends trying to support Lucy at Mike's expense, which led to Mike getting all depressive and angry, which led to a vicious cycle of Mike lashing out and feeling alienated. But then Sandy visited Roseville, and she somehow managed to fix the whole thing through her ingenue naivety and the power of love and such.

So, there's parallels to the current plot arc, we know Sandy is visiting Roseville soon, and Taeshi has a history of enjoying doing the "it's like pottery, it rhymes" thing. Thus I think there is a non-zero chance that when Sandy visits for valentines day, she somehow manages to once again single-handedly repair Mike's mental state and his relationship with Lucy and his friends.

Now, I don't think this is *likely*, because it'd go against nuSandy's characterization as being a purely negative shallow cheating villain that makes Mike miserable and prevents him from getting with his TRUE SOULMATE. But if it did happen, I'd find it both cathartic, and extremely funny.

The impression I got was that francis isnt really out of the picture or at the very least sandy didnt really understand what she did wrong, she seemed very invested in praising and defending him even while coming clean to mike. Maybe its drawing too much on how this stuff goes irl or schizoing out a bit, but for as shitty as these last chapters have been, taeshi has written stuff like that pretty realistically before. She has a knack for accurately protraying bpd or just morally reprehensible women, i wonder how she got so good at that...

I would love to know if Sandy suddenly changing her mind was literally just a moment of "clarity" of driven by something else, because to me it's the absolute worst thing she does. The ghosting and cheating are bad but coming clean and breaking it off was the best thing she could have done in that moment and genuinely would have lead to both of them being happier.

The reason Sandy didn't perma-dump Mike is because doing so wouldn't serve whatever story Taeshi is going for. In-universe, the only thing that makes sense to me is that Sandy fucked up hard and lost Francis. Not sure how she managed to do so at 2 AM her time or whatever it was, and inside of an hour to boot. But her sudden desperation and use of guilt tactics was awful suspicious. Almost as if Mike was the single last option she had left.

Though I do recall some random post in which Taeshi said that Sandy basically went "urgh if I have to choose between them I guess my mom wouldn't give me guff over Mike." If Taeshi sticks with that explanation, then Sandy is one cold hollow reptile. Imagine putting on that whole sob story song and dance over something like a mental coin flip. There can't be any real love in her.

I think she just has some conscience left, and feels guilty for abandoning Mike, since she knows it hasn't been easy for him, but relationships based on pity alone are doomed to fail.
Mike should have some self-respect, and end the relationship himself, instead of accepting her pity.

I doubt it's a permanent situation, but it sounds like Sandy put all her eggs into Mike's basket as her last connection to the good old days, then did the same to Francis when she decided to adult. Meaning Sandy has not cultivated any other backups and latched back onto Mike (for the time being). I really don't think Sandy's conscience factors into this at all, because she actively tried to guilt Mike into taking her back. Unless Sandy is egotistical enough to believe he could never be happy without her, a truly repentant Sandy would be fine just letting Mike do his own thing from then on.

Mainly I think it's because Sandy knows that Mike gives a flying fuck about her as a person and thus the kind of attention she craves. This was opposed to the vapid users and strictly professional relationships surrounding her. He got taken for granted and tossed aside when Francis at least gave the impression of providing the same, immediately and in-person, in a more relatable package.
