Are they really friends or do they just hang out because they go to same bar and work at the same job?

The male loneliness epidemic is a joke. Most men literally don't even try to socialise with people and make friends, either because they lack the social skills or the drive or are more interested in getting laid.

Not me, I come home to a wife well she’s usually done work after me, but I get our son from day care and welcome her home with a meal. I don’t have time for friends irl. I did however reconnect with my old irl friends before I moved and they welcomed me back into our dnd group after I’ve been absent for 4 years. Just do games every other Friday but hey it’s pretty fun.

Just off the top of my head:
Running, writing, reading, drawing doesnt cost that much unless you want a super fancy drawing tablet which you don't need, chess, soccer (sure you need a ball but even super destitute thirdies can manage that), cooking costs money but you have to spend money on food no matter what, a lotta instruments you can get for cheap, you already have a device so you can do coding/computer stuff, meditation, speedcubing just requires one rubix cube, learning a language

That's an exaggeration.
That being said, I can understand the few friends thing: people live in different towns/cities, high school friends get busy with families, and people at work are usually just work colleagues.
Sure you might drop a line or see people once every year or two, but it's hard to call that a friendship.

A lot of those can help you meet people. There's running clubs, book clubs, chess clubs, learning a language is great for meeting new people, etc. There's always ways of turning hobbies into social activities by finding similarly interested people. Unless you live in bumfuck nowhere, then I suppose you gotta find online groups.

That's not realism, that's cynicism, and not even the ancient greek kind of cynicism. I used to be pretty misanthropic and shut-in, but I found that when you don't go outside expecting the worst of everyone around you, you can actually meet some pretty cool people. Maybe you'll say my experience is anecdotal, but then I'll say whatever your experience has been is also anecdotal.

When you think about it Homer has no friends. Lets see...

Homer is envious and resents Flanders.
His coworkers only spend time with him due to working at the same place not because they share any interests.
Moe only tolerates Homer because he serves alcohol and has to tolerate any alcoholic to keep getting money.

And finally Barney is the only character who you would consider to be Homer's friend but Homer is so shitty he largely doesn't bother to do anything with Barney. So they're really more like acquaintances. Maybe Homer and Barney used to be friends legit when they were teenagers but as they grew older they stopped hanging out and no being alcoholics who drink beer isn't really a friendship.

So I reiterate Homer has no friends. The other male characters in Springfield can't stand Homer like Willie, Reverend Lovejoy, Skinner, etc.
