There's a massive problem where horror isn't allowed to actually delve into horror topics and the excuse of "It's scarier when it's not shown." is often used to dismiss genuinely distressing content they don't like. I personally don't care too much for horror in the first place, but if I was to watch one, I'd much rather watch the pre-MPAA shit, they couldn't just do "BLOOD GUTS KNIFE KILL KILL" cuz of the code, so there's a lot more substance, more interesting to watch.
Maybe it's just me, or the fact that moviemaking being democratized in the later half of the 20th century means there's more product than in the Golden Age, but I feel there's been more horror slop since the Hayes Code was canned

okay, here's the thing: the reason people say "it's scarier when it's not shown" is usually because people fundamentally don't have the talent, taste or budget to nail the actual execution of "showing" it. Sometimes showing the monster or whatever is great, if you can stick the landing. When you fuck it up, it becomes anti horror, ie: comedy. It turns into pure cringe. It is often just more sensible to suggest than show.
