It was really popular when I was in school.
In high school in the early 2000s I had at least 3 friends who gauged out their ears wider each month or so. I remember when they went from keeping pencils in their ear holes to being able to shove toy cars in there. I'm not too surprised to hear that fad didn't stick around.

I'm occasionally disappointed that people binding the top of their ears into an elvish point didn't become a fad. It is certainly no more extreme than ear gauging.

It’s an extremely unpredictable body mod since cartilage doesn’t heal like skin does. Different people heal up in different ways. Some ended up with cute pointy elf ears, but you were just as likely to end up with a mass of blobby scar tissue and a really fucked up ear.
